Permission Granted! Check Out The Places & Guidelines To Celebrate Chhath Puja In Udaipur This Year

A sense of divinity, a sense of prosperity runs through the veins in this 4-day festival of Chhath Puja. Chhath is one of the most important and religious Hindu festivals dedicated to Lord Surya and Chhathi Maiya. This year the festival of keeping ‘Nirjala’ fast (a fast without consuming water) for more than 36 hours is commemorating on November 8, 2021 and will end on November 11, 2021.

The festival requires for devotees to perform their rituals by standing with their feet dipped in a water body. Due to the spread of Covid-19, the devotees symbolically did their Chhath Puja as gatherings were prohibited. But to everyone’s surprise, the guidelines have been lifted this year and permission granted, but with the hinge of restrictions.

ALL ABOUT CHHATH PUJA

  • There are many stories behind as to why Chhath is celebrated but one of them says that according to Hindu mythology, it is believed that Lord Ram offered prayers to the Sun when he returned to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile.
  • Chhath Puja is celebrated on the sixth day of the month of Kartik, mainly by people who hail from Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha and eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh.
  • It is one of the most auspicious and biggest festivals dedicated to Lord Surya and, during the span of four days, devotees keep a fast that lasts from sunrise to sunset and comprises of more than 36 hours of Nirjala Fast.
  • The timings of Suryodaya (sunrise) and Suryast (Sunset) are highly significant during Chhath Puja and the celebrations begin with ‘Nahay Khay‘ also known as ‘Barona‘, followed by ‘Kharna‘ also known as ‘Sanjhwat‘, ‘Sandhya Arghya‘ and ‘Usha Arghya‘.
  • During this festival of 4 days, the devotees are allowed to consume only Satvik food (without onion and garlic) and prepare the meals with the utmost hygiene and eat only after taking a bath.
  • This year, the festivities of Chhath Puja begin on November 8 with Nahay Khay and will end on November 11 with Usha Arghya.

Four Days of Chhath Puja

  • On the first day of Nahay Khay, devotees take a bath in the holy Ganga water and clean their house and surroundings. Rice, chana dal (split Bengal gram) and bottle gourd are a must on the menu of the devotees on Nahay Khay.
  • The second day is Kharna and on this day devotees fast for the whole day and make a special prasad called Rasaio-Kheer (with jaggery and rice) accompanied with chapatis and eat it before the sunset. Devotees eat the prasad and start their nirjala fast the till Usha Arghya.
  • On the third day of Sandhya Arghya, folk songs are sung at the banks of water bodies and ghats. The worshippers prepare a special sweet dish ‘Thekua or Tikri‘ with jaggery, ghee and flour, which is offered as a prasad to Chhathi Maiya. At the ghat, the devotees take sugarcane along with a basket of fruits and bamboo soops for the evening Arghya. In the evening, at the time of sunset, they offer Arghya to Lord Surya with the family members in a nearby water body or at a ghat, which is also known as Sandhya Arghya or Pehli Arghya.
  • Usha Arghya is the last and fourth day of the four-day-long Chhath festival and is also known as Paran Din. On the final day, devotees offer prayers to the Sun and perform all the religious rituals and customs during the dawn of the day. They stand in the water bodies till the sun rises but some of the devotees sit near the banks until the sun rises. Devotees break their nirjala fast after offering Arghya to the rising sun.

Due to the spread of coronavirus, last year the devotees were not able to gather and perform the rituals near ghats and water bodies. But this year the government has lifted the restrictions and now religious events can be held in both closed and open spaces with covid appropriate behavior of applying mask, sanitizers and social distancing. This has been a good piece of news as, unlike any other year, last year the devotees had to symbolically complete their festive rituals.

Whereas the committee members of the group organizing Chhath Puja events have said that this year, keeping in mind the probable spread on corona, there will not be a grand event but the areas, especially the Dewali end at Fatehsagar has been cleaned by the committee for devotees to come and do their festivities, comfortably.

उदयपुर वासियों की ख़ुशी हुई फ़तेहसागर के साथ ओवरफ्लो!

उदयपुर में गुरुवार की सुबह शहरवासियों एवं पर्यटकों के लिए खुशियों की सौगात लेकर आई। शहर की प्रमुख झील फतहसागर के चारों गेट गुरुवार 7 अक्टूबर की सुबह 9.15 बजे जिला कलक्टर चेतन सिंह देवड़ा द्वारा खोल दिए गए।

जल संसाधन विभाग के अनुसार ऐसा पहली बार हो रहा है जब झील के गेट अक्टूबर में खोले जा रहे है। इसकी भराव क्षमता 13 फिट है और बुधवार शाम तक यहां 13 फिट 3 इंच पानी भर चुका था। जल संसाधन विभाग के अधिशाषी अभियंता के.सी.जैन ने बताया की पिछले वर्ष 6 सितंबर को गेट खोले गये थे।

फतेहसागर में पानी आने का अर्थ है साल भर पानी का संपूर्ण प्रबंध अथवा गेट खुलने के बाद अब यह झील पर्यटको के लिए आकर्षण केंद्र रहेगी। अब गेट खुलने के बाद फतेहसागर का पानी शहर के बीच यूआईटी पुलिया से आयड़ होता हुआ उदयसागर पहुंचेगा। सुरक्षा की दृष्टि से पुलिस थाना अंबामाता को भी विभाग की ओर से सूचना दी गई है।

कोरोना का संक्रमण कम होने के कारन प्रशासन ने उदयपुर वासियों का संयम देखते हुए फतेहसागर के गेट गुरुवार को खोलने का फैसला लिया। ऐसे में फतहसागर का गेट खुलने के दौरान भी जिला प्रशासन ने आमजनों से कोविड प्रोटोकॉल की पालना करने की अपील की है। जिला कलक्टर ने कहा है कि इस दौरान मास्क एव सोशल डिस्टेंशिंग का विशेष ध्यान रखे।

  • Due to close interaction with depression in the family, he decided to pursue psychology.
  • He is also working on an extremely sensitive mental health topic, depression and is taking motivational seminars too for the past 3-4 years. The motto is to reduce the cases of depression, especially amongst youngsters.

दूषित भोजन से विमंदित बच्चों की मृत्यु के मामले में चिकित्सा विभाग ने नारायण सेवा संस्थान को नोटिस किया जारी

बड़ी गांव स्थित उदयपुर के प्रतिष्ठित संस्थान नारायण सेवा के विमंदित बाल पुनर्वास केंद्र में तकरीबन 9 बच्चों की तबियत ख़राब होने और 3 बच्चों की फ़ूड पोइज़निंग से मृत्यु होने का मामला सामने आया था। इस मामले की फ़ूड रिपोर्ट अब जा कर 3 सप्ताह बाद आई है। रिपोर्ट के अनुसार विमंदित गृह के पेयजल में गड़बड़ी की आशंका जताई गई है और पानी में स्टॉर्च की मात्रा अधिक मिली है। स्वास्थ्य विभाग ने नारायण सेवा संस्थान को इस संबंध में नोटिस भी जारी कर दिया है।

दरअसल कुछ दिन पिछले नारायण सेवा संस्थान की ओर से संचालित विमंदित पुनर्वास केंद्र में दूषित भोजन के सेवन से एक दर्जन से ज्यादा बच्चों को उल्टी दस्त की शिकायत सामने आई थी। बच्चों की हालत देखते हुए जल्द से जल्द सभी बच्चों को एमबी अस्पताल में भर्ती करवाया गया, जहां इलाज के दौरान 5 दिनों के भीतर तीन बच्चों की मृत्यु हो गई। वहीं 6 बच्चे अस्पताल में भर्ती रहे।

मामले की गंभीरता को देखते हुए जिला कलेक्टर के निर्देश पर सीएमएचओ के नेतृत्व में कमेटी का गठन हुआ था। इस दौरान कमेटी में विमंदित गृह से फूड सैंपल भी लिए गए। रिपोर्ट में कमिटी ने भी नारायण सेवा संस्थान की कई खामियों को पाया था।

सीएमएचओ डॉ. दिनेश खराड़ी ने बताया कि चिकित्सा विभाग की टीम ने 21 नमूने लिए थे, जिसमें से 14 सैंपल में गड़बड़ी सामने आए है। 11 सैंपल मिस ब्रांड और 2 सैंपल एक्सपायर्ड थे। समिति ने बताया कि 1 सैंपल में स्टॉर्च की मात्रा भी ज्यादा मिली हैं। इसके आधार पर नारायण सेवा संस्थान को नोटिस जारी किया गया है। इस मामले में अब तक पोस्टमार्टम रिपोर्ट का इंतजार है।

When Mewar’s Gavri Traveled To The National Capital

Rajasthan is a state of culture, heritage and royalty, and primary among the attributes of the state, is the kingdom of Mewar, the place where festivals, tribes, rituals and folk mingle together to form a diverse view of culture and lineage.

An American photographer, Waswo X. Waswo, has done much to promote the regional culture of this land. His latest effort, in collaboration with local photographer and artist Rajesh Soni, has been the book and various exhibitions titled “Gavri Dancers”.

Waswo works in the vintage studio portrait mode, making images with painted backdrops at his studio in the Village of Varda. He then prints black and white photographs that are hand-brushed with colour by his long-time collaborator, Rajesh Soni, a third-generation Udaipur photo hand-colourist.

A recent show has just opened close to New Delhi, presented by Gallery Latitude 28 in the large galleries of Museo Camera, Centre for the Photographic Arts in Gurugram. The exhibition is called “Gauri Dancers: The Opera of Mewar”.

Before diving into the event, let’s reconcile what exactly Gavri is.

GAVRI

  • In the versatile land of Mewar, prevails a tribal dance form known as Gavri, Gavari or Gauri.
  • The folk dance is treated as a festival by the Bheel tribe of Mewar.
  • They perform and celebrate the dance ritual with full joy coupled with spirituality.
  • The festival is significantly celebrated on the next day of Shravani Purnima or Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi Purnima.
  • Young boys and men of the tribe dress as females and perform the dance form, village to village, telling stories through their folklores and tales.

THE EXHIBITION

  • The art is being presented by Gallery Latitude 28 in the large galleries of Museo Camera, Centre for the Photographic Arts in Gurugram.
  • The exhibition commenced from September 17, 2021 and will close on October 17, 2021.
  • The display of such extensive documentation of a little-know tradition to the Delhi crowd attracted and drew the attention of New Delhi’s art community and high society.
  • Waswo even brought a group of farmers from the village of Boro Walla Madri to make the traditional Gavri elephant within the gallery, symbolically marking it as a ritual performance.
  • The elephant was made up of grass straws, three cots, bangles, and other village materials.
  • The tradition of Gavri is almost unknown known outside Mewar. The seventy-five photographs in this exhibition and book are beginning to change that.
  • Each of the 75 black and white photographs you’ll find in the gallery have been patiently hand-tinted by Rajesh Soni, a well-known artist from Udaipur.

ABOUT THE ARTIST DUO

Rajesh Soni is from Udaipur and is a third-generation photo hand-colourist, primarily known for his abilities to hand paint digital photographs. His grandfather was Prabu Lal Verma, a court photographer to the Maharana Bhupal Singh of Mewar.

Waswo X. Waswo was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in the U.S.A., and studied photography in both his hometown and Florence, Italy. He has lived and travelled in India for over twenty years and has made his home in Udaipur from the past thirteen. Waswo is known as an artist who collaborates with local artists and miniaturists. Waswo X. Waswo’s series on Gavri began over ten years ago. His style is to capture portraiture with natural light and an eye for detail. Though he shoots his portraits in a studio, he does his best to capture the naturalistic moment.   

In 2019 the duo of Waswo X. Waswo and Rajesh Soni created the first full-sized hardcover book on Gauri Dancers, published by Mapin, India.

When Mewar’s Gavri travelled to the national capital, it was definitely a proud moment. The collaborators from our city are on a mission to promote and elaborate the art and culture of Mewar throughout India and the world. Amidst the times when we are losing touch with our history and culture, this exhibition has reminded us to stick to our roots and be proud citizens of Mewar.
