Here’s All You Need To Know About Robin Hood Army Udaipur Chapter

Are you aware of the story of Robin Hood? If yes, then you would understand to the core of initiative of Robin Hood Army, as “Hunger knows no friend but its feeder.” This quote satisfies the mission and vision of this non-profit organisation.

Robin Hood Army is a not-for-profit organisation with a passion for serving food to the people; Robin Hood Army Udaipur is the saviour of many needy people with an aim to abolish hunger by eliminating food waste across the region. They serve those who are unable to afford food and go empty stomach most of the nights.

robinhood-army-udaipur

Either living on a footpath, or in small villages, it’s painful to witness that children, adults, and aged people suffer commonly from malnutrition. And, it’s not only the problem of our Udaipur but an entire country.

That’s why to know deeply about the agenda of Robin Hood Army to serve the hungry citizens; we reached to meet Chahat Arora, who looks after the entire management of Robins i.e. volunteers in Udaipur associated with this organisation day & night. And, while having the conversation we got awareness of many things that probably everyone should know.

What is Robin Hood Army? Can you let readers know about its origination?

“Robin Hood Army is a non-profit organisation founded on August 26, 2014, by Neel Ghose and Anand Sinha in Delhi and registered as a charitable trust in India so far. It is a volunteer-based organisation that works to get a high amount of food to the less fortunate sections of society in cities across India and 11 other countries.

robin_hood_army

Right now it consists of over 8,435 volunteers spread across 41 cities, and have served food to over 1,848,210 people till date. Most volunteers are young working professionals from varied fields who reaches out to feed different places and unprivileged people including homeless families, orphanages, night shelters, homes for abandoned children, patients from public hospitals, and much more.

Robin Hood Army is decentralised and does not accept monetary contributions. What we require only is a time of the people who are willing to help.”

What’s the focus and inspiration behind objective of Robin Hood Army?

robin-hood-army-udaipur-chapter

“The primary focus is to bring an end to food wastage and to make meals consistently available to those who need it. As we have seen the challenge is not the lack of food, but it’s the starvation and deficiency of calorie intake, which the main reason for deaths. If you look at the statistics, there are approximately 850 million hungry people in the world. Out of which, 82% individuals live in countries with food surplus, not the food shortage.

It’s seen by many that hunger kills people more than AIDS, Malaria, and combined with any other diseases or terrorism activities. In every 10 seconds, a child dies from starvation.

And, we are living in a world where one-third of the food produced is never consumed due to which one in every eight people sleeps hungry each night.

By clarifying our facts about these issues, Robin Hood Army was inspired to work with a vision to create self-sustained chapters who will look after their local community. And in the process, motivate people around us to give back to those who need it most.”

Robin Hood Army has focused on the problem of Food wastage globally. So, what’s more, you guys have noticed that you are willing people should know about this issue?

“There can be many reasons, like for Syria it’s war, for Africa it is poverty, it can be a flood, geographical positioning, etc. But in India is being the disparity between the rich and the poor that leads to wastage of food.

kids served at robin hood army

Wastage of food is a universal problem, but our country can afford it a lot less than any others. The amount of food wasted in India annually is enough to feed a country like Egypt for one year.

There are many pieces of research, which also shows this. Out of which, when a team of 10 professors from the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Bangalore, surveyed 75 of Bangalore’s wedding halls over six months, they recorded a wastage of over 943 tons of good quality food i.e. enough food to feed 2.6 Crore people a regular Indian meal.

But all this can be avoided with little efforts of many volunteers who can manage to get surplus food from restaurants or any other place across to the less fortunate people.”

In works of Robin Hood Army, there’s a section of Robin Hood Academy. Can you brief about that?

robin hood army academy

“The Robin Hood Academy empowers 1200+ street child’s with basic primary education. Our Robins i.e. volunteers conduct regular weekend classes and excursions with a standardised curriculum to introduce and drive the spirit of learning. The Academy aims to be a bridge between the street and schools, by giving children the tools and knowledge to go to school.

Also, we are looking forward to creating access to education, which is the purest form of building a better nation. Every kid on the streets of our cities should have the opportunity to a better life.”

So, how many needy and hungry people Robin Hood Army Udaipur Chapter has served till date?

robin-hood-army-udaipur-chapter

“In the region of Udaipur, the organisation is serving since 1.5 years. And, till date, we have served around fifty thousand (50k) people so far and still counting. Our volunteers reach through call inquiry and collect food from different locations to feed in the day as well night.”

Chahat, It’s overwhelming to see that you and many other volunteers like you are associated with such a great effort that only needs much more robins to feed the hunger of less fortunate people. So, this won’t let anyone sleep hungry on streets at night in our city.

Wish you all the very best for your efforts. Keep working Robin Hood Army. And, people if you want to contribute them just by serving people or providing food in any way. Be a Robin Today!!

Ever Wondered Why Pichola Is Called Pichola?-The Hidden Reasons Behind The Names Of Our Lakes!

Know The Story Behind The Names Of Our Lakes!

Udaipur is famous for its lakes and the scenic beauty these lakes hold. But have you ever wondered by these lakes are called by the names they have? Let us find out the hidden reasons behind the names of our lakes.

Fatehsagar Lakeudaipur

Fatehsagar or FS is one favorite lake of the people of Udaipur. The reason why the lake is called Fatehsagar is here. In 1687, Maharana Jai Singh constructed the lake, but after two hundred years the earthen pit which formed the lake was washed away during floods in Udaipur.

Then in 1889, Maharana Fateh Singh built the “Connaught Dam,” the one which we cross before the Dewali area, to mark the visit of King of Connaught. The dam enlarged the lake, and it was later renamed after the King as Fateh Sagar Lake.

Pichola Lakeudaipur

Lake Pichola has an unmatched view. Most of the luxurious hotels are in this area and give a panoramic view of the City Palace. Pichola is an artificial freshwater lake and has two legends behind its unusual name.

One, it was created in the year 1362 AD and is named after the nearby Picholi village. It was enlarged by Maharana Udai Singh II, by flooding Picholi village, which gave the lake its name.

Two, in 1362, the beautiful lake was built by Pichhu Banjara during the ruling period of Maharana Lakha, after whom the lake is named as ‘Pichola.’

Isn’t this interesting!!!

Badi Lakeudaipur

Why the lake has the name as ‘Badi’ has two legends again!

First, because it is near the village called Badi.

Second, as it’s also known as Jiyan Sagar, it was named after Jana Devi.  She was the mother of Maharana Raj Singh who built the lake Badi.

Jaisamand Lakeudaipur

The Maharana following his father (Maharana Raj Singh I who built Rajsamand Lake) created the lake Jaisamand.

He did it by damming a small river, the Gomati, and building a massive embankment. Jai Singh named this lake Jaisamand after himself. The meaning of the name is supposed to be ‘Ocean of Victory’ (Jai- His name and ‘mand’ meaning ‘ocean’). The lake is also known as Dhebar Lake and is India’s second-largest artificial lake.

Udai Sagar Lakeudaipur

It has a simple story; in 1559, Maharana Udai Singh constructed a dam on Berach River to make sure that his kingdom has an adequate supply of water. Udai Sagar Lake was developed as an outcome of this dam and is named after the king who built it.

Swaroop Sagar Lakeudaipur

Swaroop Sagar is an artificial lake.  Swaroop Sagar Lake was built by Maharana Swaroop Singh (1842-1861) after whom the lake is named as Swaroop Sagar.

The lake is also known as Kumhariya Talab, which serves as the connecting body between Lake Fateh Sagar and Pichola. It was built to avoid flood situations in the city and maintain a high water level in the adjoining lakes.

AKSHADHA – Expression Of Soulful Poetry By Aradhana Pandya

Poetry! A combination of emotions or just mere thoughts of a person combined in a writing format to represent a preaching in short form. Whatever you take it, in the world of words, poetry is not just limited to these two things. It’s more than that. And, to understand and explore more about poetry, a glance through ‘Akshadha’ was worth to catch up for.

This Hindi poetry book is written by Aradhana Pandya, B. Tech student from Pacific College, Udaipur. She unlocked a heap of enormous emotions in the form of her symmetrical and asymmetrical poems. And, what we got from Akshadha – God’s blessings, let’s find out.

Audacious concept in poems

Akshadha_hindi_poetry

As per our read to Akshadha, we found a bold objective weaved in it. And, this goes quite suitable stated at the book cover as well enrolled with the name of Aradhana Pandya ‘Bebaak’.

While reading all her poems and reciting them within the heart, a sense of attachment with all those thoughts revealing the concept of a girl’s inner voice, independence, and concern about nation was questioned in the poetic lines.

A special thing about the book is that all poems are precise, specific, and put something meaningful to reader’s mind if a person is a fan of poetry.

Throughout the poems, one can experience a sense of voice speaking while expressing an agony about the social situations in the simplest form of words that are understandable even by the ones who are not so aware of poetry writing and recitals.

Aradhana’s notion and inspiration behind her book

Aradhana Pandya

Apart from a perspective, when we asked Aradhana about her entire journey, she elaborated her thoughts with the firmness that, “Akshadha is influenced out of common cases and issues that are often heard in newspapers. I still remember the case of ‘Nirbhaya’, Delhi rape case that extremely offended my thought process. And, then there was a flood case of Uttarakhand, in which many people died, and some were not able to reach their home even. All these societal situations affected me to the core, that’s why I thought to express something in my way through my skills of poetry.
When it comes to inspiration, I was truly into pieces of writings since 8th standard. And, behind my book, I can say my parents and teachers supported me a lot. Most of all, I am thankful to my best friend Shivani Tyagi, who was always there for me and helped me a lot at every point from start to the end of publishing. As when we went for sponsorships and asked for support, rejection was a part that was faced at maximum places. But, I didn’t give up on anything and continued with all the task either it was searching for a cover designer or doing a launch event on a small budget.”

Aradhana! We believe that everyone must be proud of you. As it’s not that easy to take the initiative to express something in the world of literature that is just a pinch of news for many but should be considered when it comes to feelings of girl’s inner voice and deeds of sorrow that are often felt, seen, and sometimes remain unheard.

We wish you all the very best for future!! 🙂

Living With Acid Scars But Not Broken: Sheroes Hangout Café Has True Stars

Can you imagine the pain of a cut, injection, or any thermal element that repels your skin unknowingly? Well, we just can’t! But what about the agony of those people, who have gone through ACID ATTACK?

Acid Attack Survivors, who faced a lot of struggles, pain, and unwanted questions of everyone without being at fault. They were attacked by some of the sick minds out of no reason, remained in horrible situations for a longer time and even going with it till date.

When we made our visit to Sheroes Hangout Cafe and met Ritu, Shabnam, and Bala, we got a feel of real she heroes, who not only signify themselves but all the woman that came up with a fire in their respective zones.

sheroes-hangout-cafe

Having a meeting with them while sitting in a comfort zone of Sheroes Hangout Cafe and knowing their story of life with the initiation of place. We got to know that their concept is not about making any profit or gaining sympathy. All they want is to raise awareness amongst the people to “Stop Acid Attack”.

And, most importantly, their campaign #STOPACIDATTACKS, which initiated on the 8th March is all about this objective to give strength and new hope to lead an independent life to those girls who survived an acid attack.

Words of Ritu

rupa_ritu_sheroes
Ritu in Blue dress with another girl Rupa

An acid attack survivor from Rohtak (Haryana), who is now heading in Sheroes Hangout Udaipur, Ritu exclaimed about the concept and how she fought with all the circumstances that are hard even to think off. And, while having a conversation about Sheroes, she said,

The first Sheroes Café came in 10th Dec 2014 at Lucknow. From their journey got its start, by the acid attack fighters and for the acid attack survivors. This café is not just a hangout place but also an inspirational zone to give them a job or to let them rise in any other field of education, business, or anything they want to pursue. Apart from all, at all the branches of Sheroes Cafe, there is no rate specified in the menu. People can wish to pay whatever they want. And, through all that raised funds, we pay for curative treatments, and other expenses, which a survivor requires the most.

As we have probably noticed in every field, it is a must to develop skills and the survivors who have gone through a lot are not much educated and wealthy as well to pay for their medical cause or any other interests. Whereas, we can’t deny this fact also that requirement of good-looking people is more everywhere.

But, when you are in a condition, where you wake up with a face that is not the same now even after a lot of gut-wrenching surgeries and scars for a lifetime. It’s hard to live by! And, when your attacker is from your family itself, then question shouts in mind why me only?

After all this, it’s somehow hard to have faith, but then we know there are good people as well who are ready to support us in the best possible way they can.”

Remarks by Shabnam

sheroes_shabnam_with_dolly
Shabnam in white with another survivor Dolly

It was hard to believe for us that a man who is a father of three daughters can do this cruel act just out of rejection. He made Shabnam victim of acid attack just to satisfy his ego. But raging out with strongness all the way from Uttar Pradesh, Shabnam fought for herself and is happily married now. When we asked Shabnam about her incident and cafe, in such a polite way, she stated,

Sheroes Hangout has been established to boosts the self-confidence of the survivors. As when we think of the attack, it still gives us a shiver in our mind and souls, but on the other hand, all we pray is it should not happen with any other woman. And, criminals should realise before doing this act that it’s not just spoiling the life of survivor but it is creating a black mark on their family as well.

We are here just to change thoughts and perceptions of people. Those, who are the victim, should fight for it because lawyers, police officials, or any other higher authorised people do not let family’s file cases and justice is not given so far. Even we were betrayed and dragged towards a sense of negativity after facing it all. But, losing hope and killing your soul is not an option.”

Bold Thoughts of Bala

bala and ritu sheroes hangout cafe
Bala & Ritu together

Just to take revenge from her family, an aged zamindar from her village threw acid on Bala and her grandfather who died of the attack. She belonged to Uttar Pradesh, Bijnor, and while sharing her words with simplicity and boldness she uttered us that,

“Just to satisfy their proud and ego these persons do such things. And, people especially police are aware of the pain of a victim, but being in their contact just for a handsome amount of rupees they don’t support victims properly. Whatever happens, cases gets even more complicated with time and justice is not done, as it is supposed to be, because a criminal is set free on the power of money.

With all these situations, it’s hard to gain faith back. Also, we cannot judge people because trust factor remains a question. We don’t want consolation, nor we want money. All we need is every individual should understand that just to satisfy an evil thought of mind, you have no right to bid on someone’s life.”

On the endnote, we just want to raise this thing and ask everyone. Whose fault it is that these attacks are still happening? Why women are not safe? Why sometimes a family member becomes a curse to them? Do you have an answer?

geeta_neetu_mother_daughter
Geeta and Neetu, Mother-Daughter duo at Sheroes Hangout Cafe

Apparently, no one has!! But justification clears only one thing, that maybe our Law, Police, Society, and Principles have lost terms of dignity that we can’t protect and create the world for the other half of our community.

Hope never dies, but fighting with courage against all these acts can only get enlightened when we keep ourselves in their place.

Take Pledge Towards Something Better.

My experience with the ActionUdaipur App went decent. I live in an area which is close to Sisarma rural zone, quite far from the actual city hub. The problem involved was of garbage. There was no garbage dumping area or cleaning in our area. No government sweeper came to clean up the colony. After some time, the garbage accumulated started breeding bacteria and very foul smell aroused from the same.

What I did was simply downloaded the App from the Play Store and took two photographs of the garbage heap. Filled in the required fields, uploaded the pictures and clicked on send.

The required fields are mentioned in the screenshots I took to keep a track of things. Have a look.

Turn Your Ideas Into Action: My experience of using ActionUdaipur App
On successful registering the complaint

I was waiting to get any call or message from ActionUdaipur but unfortunately didn’t receive anything of that sort. Well, after a week I thought this is not going to work. On the 10th day of filing the complaint, a person turned up in my locality asking for me. He told that he shall take care of the dumping and that he is there only to have a look on the complaint’s status. After 3 days of his visit, a cleaner with a vehicle came and took all the trash from the place and cleaned the area.

I had a mixed feeling about the action by ActionUdaipur. Anyway, they did resolve the problem for the time being.  Take a look on the after and before pictures of my area.

“Ann Ki Baat”: An act of kindness by Radio City Udaipur

An initiative taken by Radio city Udaipur, “Ann Ki Baat” was an act of kindness to spread awareness about wastage of food. This was a two week ON AIR activity by Radio City. The activity was promoted in the morning shows, broadcasted every day from 7 AM to 11 AM by RJ Suri.

The activity received a huge response appreciating the initiative taken by the Radio station.

The activity involved feeding the poor and needy. A group from Udaipur, named Robin-Hood Army, helped Radio City in dispensing food to the people. The goal was to feed the maximum number of people and since the first week of April till date, many poor and meager classes of people have been fed under this activity.

The RJs of the station took a step forward to feed the people on the footpath and roadside. Many colossal organizations like Radisson Hotel Lake City Mall, Ashoka Bakery, Shubh Kesar Marriage Gardens, Geetanjali Institute offered food for deprived people.

One commendable act done by Radisson Hotel and Ashoka Bakery was placing of a refrigerator outside their place with leftover food in it so that the people in need can have it for free.

The main objective of the activity by Radio City was to float the message of creating awareness amidst people of Udaipur regarding wastage of food. The activity has successfully fed around 1000 people who were deprived of food.

RMantra: Refined By Hands, Run By Heart

RMantra founded by Neha Kothari and Neha Goyal: Two young women who not only share their first name but also a strong passion for community welfare.

Rmantra

Their friendship started when they met while pursuing engineering. After Bachelors, Neha Goyal started working as Research Assistant in a Government College in Udaipur while Neha Kothari (Fondly called as Dolly) opted for masters and thereafter joined an NGO despite her technical background. The duo has been involved in informal Education Program for slums through creative thinking and Value Education and volunteered for various NGOs since their college days.

But It was in 2014, when they found a common purpose. They came across two Projects, one was organizing a camp for slums in Udaipur and the other was a camp for kids in summer. Working on these two projects was an eye opener experience for the ladies as the sense of giving back to the community was very fulfilling . This laid the foundation of RMantra and without giving it a second thought, they quit their jobs and decided to shift gears fulltime towards their true passions : Art, Creativity, and Service.

Rmantra - Neha Kothari and Neha Goyal

RMantra started off as a part time venture through workshops, classes, and sessions in various societies of Udaipur including women and children. These workshops gave a valuable insight on the huge untapped talent of young girls and women in various crafts and presented them with a platform to showcase their abilities. Humbled by their talent, skills, and resilience, the two Nehas decided to provide a platform for these underprivileged women to earn a respectable living and contributing to their society. All along the journey their families were extremely supportive specially their brothers Dhruv and Nikhil cheered them from the side line.

They decided to take RMantra to another level by bringing together a large group of girls and women to make handmade products and provide them a meaningful employment. Finally, in 2015 RMantra was independently registered as Partnership Firm under Indian Partnership Act, 1932. The name RMantra imbibes their passion for handmade products, and the tagline aptly goes “Refined by Hands, Run by Heart”.

This threw up a new problem. “We had registered our company, but we didn’t know how and from where to start and execute our idea, then my husband Anand, motivated and advised us to use social media platforms” recalls Neha about those days

They designed some envelopes and band for Rakhi and promoted them through social media and it was a big hit. By November, the team had an idea of the market, the customers requirement and had enough range of products with them from handmade bags to envelopes, and paintings.

In November they reached out to some of the largest Ecommerce players in the country like Amazon, Snapdeal etc. to create a larger market targeting the whole of India. To create brand awareness and bring more innovation they hired Trapti as creative head. The time was finally ripe for launching their own portal www.rmantra.in in march of 2016. Today RMantra has grown from a team of 2 to 7 when women and girls from less privileged background are given an opportunity to make a living.

Rmantra

“The primary mission for the RMantra is to support handmade made by women from less privileged backgrounds. Our dream is to involve women be it our grandma, a student or housewife who are looking for opportunity to showcase their talent, their creations and earn a living in doing so. There are so many mass produced items out there that it often feels that the world has lost the respect for the small, handmade items. Our goal is that when you see our product, You feel the passion that has gone into making it” says the proud Dolly.

Rmantra

Rmantra

Since its inception RMantra has grown slowly but steadily and has successfully conducted several exhibitions, catering to different sectors of business, and residential apartments and getting an over whelming response for the products at each place. Recalling there journey so far, Neha concludes with these words “We have now a wide range of handmade products especially our personalized gifts each with a different theme have made us unique as a brand. The positive responses have given us strength to achieve and strive for much better in the future. It’s been an exciting and fulfilling experience so far and the journey has just only begun.”

Divine Idol Behind Saksham School – Dr. Achala R Mogra

“Every child is special, but some are uniquely chosen to be very special,” that’s what we need to conclude and realize whenever we see a child that requires extreme attention, care, and support. Children born with physical and mental disabilities both are treated in the way of disappointment or burden by many parents. But, it is to be understood that Kids with special needs deserve to live a healthy and happier life like all others. The general thought of several people and society towards these children was understood by Dr. Achala R Mogra, founder of Saksham (The school for very special kids) and president of Neelanjan Seva Sansthan.

Dr Achala Mogra 2

saksham the school for very special kids

Dr. Achala initiated Saksham around 2 and half years back on 1st September 2013 as a centre to redefine the future of special kids and their parents. Every parent that came to her with the disability of their child received the joy of healing that they discovered in their kid. Her attempts and love that cured many children’s made parents also realized that they have a very special child who is God gifted just like others. For better brain development and potential of kids, various therapies like Neurodevelopment therapy, sensory integration, Acupressure therapy, physiotherapy, PECS, Visual stimulation, acupuncture, Yoga, Naturopathy, Reiki, Mantra therapy, and color therapy are done in Saksham.

Along with Saksham School, Mrs. Achala have also initiated DARE society which is the school for physically handicapped children in Bihar and Jeevandhara Institute of Neurodevelopment in Kerala.

dr achala mogra saksham

When we came into the conversation with her, she described the two reasons that are behind all the attempts which she has done till date. And, out of which one of the inspirational reason is her son who is life to her. Dr. Mogra left all her work, just to treat her son ‘Archit’ to see him growing by beating all those disabilities that are termed as a challenge to handle by the society. As soon as she saw herself as a parent to a very special kid, she realized that many want that their child should also lead a normal life by pulling out all the concepts that have been built since so long. With the belief that “Children with special needs aren’t sent to first parents, they make parents special”, and that’s what as a mother she has experienced.
dr Achala R Mogra son Archit

From that initial phase, her research in the field of Spagyric medicines from past 12 years made a substantial difference to patients of cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome, muscular dystrophy, Cancer, thalassemia, and much more. As a Spagyrist, she got her training in Italy and out of very few doctors in India, she got certified as Iridologist. But, her achievements doesn’t end up here, she has been given several awards for her outstanding work in research of Spagyric medicines and holds several acclaimed articles along with research papers in her courtesy. She is a renowned electro homeopath and many Eh practitioners all over the country and abroad are using her medicines to treat very special kids.

The school of very special kids is not just the boom to our Lake City but, a tribute from Dr. Achala. Hats off to you, and May God bless you to continue with such a great work for the betterment of child that are still denied by the society.

If you also know any of the children who requires very special care then, don’t just wait to give a gift of love by the Saksham that too at an early age. So, that you can see the child nurtured well at the adolescence.

The Story of: Raven Charitable Trust

There is a bad world out there making us lose faith in good. But in that dusky graveyard of greed ridden souls when a child walks laying flowers on every grave, he unknowingly lays a new path for good proving that humanity and hope can still thrive in the darkest corners of the world. Raven Charitable Trust is one such infant organization which has made it its only goal to provide better and economical healthcare to people.

As like any other interview, we thought it to be, we packed our stuff and rolled. Although the destination and organisation of interest were changed, we had a hope of coming back with an amazing story to tell about the founding of the organisation. And Raven Charitable Trust didn’t disappoint us.

Where the usual stories of establishments may have heart touching beginnings, the story of this organisation has a surprising one.

In the year 2008 Mrs. Charlotte Raven visited India with her beloved husband. Mrs Raven who had lived in Kashmir earlier was more than eager to visit this country once again. But unfortunately during her visit, her husband fell sick and needed medical care. It was during this time of need that she was introduced to Dr Deepak Babel. Over the course of the treatment none of them knew that their casual conversations would lead to the beginning of something that would change not only their but also many other peoples’ lives too.

I know it is hard to believe that the seeds for Raven Charitable were sown somewhere in between those casual and friendly talks but it’s the truth and none of us know which next great organisation is hidden among our casual talks.  As it is wisely said “Chances are always there, it takes a wise mind to spot them.”

Since its beginning in 2009, and a year after, the Raven Charitable Trust has been sailing its two ships “DISHA” and “PEHAL” successfully under the captain-ship of Dr. Deepak Babel.

Well that was indeed the beginning for a healthcare organisation but the important part of the beginning that we discovered later were the two initiatives “DISHA” and “PEHAL”. They might not be the reason for beginning, but they are the reasons the organisation is known for.

DISHA PIC - Raven Charitable

“DISHA” was the first initiative of the RCT. It is basically a day care centre situated in Bari Village of Udaipur, Rajasthan. “DISHA” focuses on providing free healthcare for poor people. It has a well-built infrastructure which has been serving for greater good on the following purposes for rural population:

  •   General healthcare and hygiene
  •   Nutrition
  •   Women’s healthcare (Gynaecology/Obstetrics)
  •   Children’s healthcare (Paediatrics)
  •   Healthcare education

Now before we start talking about “PEHAL”, I would like to prepare you a bit. Thalassemia is an autosomal recessive blood disorder, functions by weakening and destroying Red Blood Cells.

Didn’t get it?

Don’t worry. We too didn’t get it until Dr Babel explained it to us after our first study of it on Wikipedia. So in simple words, Thalassemia is a genetically caused blood disorder which results in destruction of Red Blood Cells. For those of you who don’t know, Red Blood Cells are responsible for carrying Oxygen in blood.

So once they are destroyed there will be no way to transport oxygen, which is vital for human body, resulting in death of the person.

A bloody murderer it is.

      “Thalassemia”

The scary part of this story is that you, I, our friends, parents, cousins or any person we know could be a carrier of this disease. Thalassemia is diagnosed usually in babies. But this doesn’t mean we cannot be carrying it.  In medical terms we might be a carrier.

A carrier doesn’t shows signs of the disease but when two carriers mate and by chance two disease carrying genes are transferred to the new born, then the new born will be suffering from thalassemia or any other genetically transmitted disease. Therefore it is very important to get tested for genetic diseases before mating or planning to have a child.

Now that you know the basics about Thalassemia, we will go back to “PEHAL”. The whole purpose of “PEHAL” is to provide medical & financial care and attention to children suffering from Thalassemia. As its literal meaning, to initiate, “PEHAL” has initiated a revolution to educate people, cure Thalassemia and is helping families get back on track.

Since Thalassemia is usually fatal by the age of 2 to 3 years, the family of the child is affected both emotionally and financially. A part of “PEHAL” is working by connecting families of children together to make them strong and supportive. These families together help each other overcome fears which in turn help in better treatment for their children.

Children who are diagnosed with this disease have to undergo a life-long treatment which includes regular blood transfusion. The regular blood transfusion is also responsible for the biggest side effect of the treatment i.e. increased level of iron in the body.

Too much iron can result in damage to the heart, liver and endocrine system, which includes glands that produce hormones that regulate processes throughout the body. The damage is characterized by excessive deposits of iron. Without adequate iron chelation therapy, almost all patients with beta-thalassemia are likely to accumulate potentially fatal iron levels.

“PEHAL” helps families in understanding the purpose and importance of chelation therapy for a thalassemia patient. Other important aspect of this knowledge is that thalassemia patients should not be given extra iron.

A thalassemia patient is required to undergo blood transfusion so that the defective bone marrow remains suppressed and does not produce defective red blood cells. A normal transfusion costs around Rupees 8000 to 9000. “PEHAL” is helping in reducing this cost by 70%.

Alternative to transfusion is Bone Marrow Transplant which is quite a permanent cure. The cost of this treatment is estimated to be around Rupees 20 lakhs. “PEHAL” with the help of Apollo Group’s partnership has been able to provide bone marrow transplant at a reduced amount of 10 lakh rupees.

It will be quite harsh to say this, but it is an upsetting truth that thalassemia can destroy a family financially and its emotional implications are countless. And we are not talking about only the child suffering from it.

Usually Thalassemia is detected when the baby is of 8 to 9 months. The first symptoms are blood loss.  But before this a test can be done while the baby is still in the womb. This test can tell us if the baby has thalassemia or not. If it has thalassemia than parents should get the baby aborted. Abortion in such cases are legal.

Another test could be done which detects whether the parents are carriers of the disease or not. If found as carriers they should consult a doctor as soon as possible.

“PEHAL” is working round the clock to educate and help people to fight this disease. Presently they are catering 140 patients. All 140 patients are children of age between 2 to 10 years. With proper treatment in these modern times a thalassemia suffering patient’s life expectancy can be increased to a minimum of 30 years.

The captain of the ships “PEHAL” and “DISHA”- Dr Deepak Babel has been doing his job commendably well. The projects now have a dedicated team of experts, better and more knowledgeable families in terms of the disease(s) and a wide social reach. With the help of modern technologies they are connected to people via Facebook, blog etc. to spread awareness.

Dr Deepak Babel is unlike other doctor we have ever met. He is the first person to tell us that he not only suggests but also recommends alternative treatments such as homeopathy, reiki, Ayurveda etc. as long as they are helping in curing the problem. With the captainship of such a broad minded man we ask you to join and support him in driving these ships around the country to cure and save lives.

Wishing everyone associated with Raven Charitable Trust and its projects and their captain:

 todo lo mejor
