What all to take away from Udaipur with just ₹500?

Udaipur has always enchanted us with its beauty and it becomes next to impossible to forget once you have been here. Such is the charm of the city that people often refer to this place as the ‘Kashmir of Rajasthan’ or ‘Venice of the East’. No wonder why this city is compared with some of the most beautiful places on the planet.

Visiting this majestic city surely is one-of-a-kind experience but what really strengthens this experience are the memories of Udaipur and more so in the form of collectibles, antiques, handicrafts, jewelry, wearables and many more items. Udaipur has been gifted with a rich history and unlike any other place, puts it on with pride, in the form of some famous intricate artworks and keepsakes that have since long, become the popular choice for reviving the royal Rajputana feel and a chance to reanimate the luxurious lifestyle of the ancestors of Mewar. And not just this, these things are nowadays used to decorate houses and other places as well.

But ‘the paradox of choice’ is as true as it gets and Udaipur is filled up to the brim with loads of varieties of items to take and one often gets confused as to what to buy and what to leave behind. Additionally, a substantial amount of money is what it usually costs to buy these items because things can get really expensive sometimes.

Udaipur: Bird Lover’s Paradise!

Who doesn’t love birds with their multi-hued feathers and different forms of the body flying high in the azure sky, perched on branches of trees, swimming effortlessly on the still water of the lakes or driving into the water in search of their prey? The sight of these beautiful avians, one of God’s most attractive gifts to man, always gladdens one’s mind and soul.

Well-known all over the world is the glorious cultural and historic past of Mewar. The intricate sculpture and fascinating folk traditions of the region are unique. In addition to all this, 24 important bird areas in the states, there are six in Udaipur viz Jaisamand lake and sanctuary Phulwari Ki Naal and Sajjangarh sanctuary Sei Dam, Udaipur lakes and Baghdara crocodile park. There are four more such regions in the neighboring districts namely Kumbhalgarh sanctuary, Sita Mata sanctuary, Mount Abu sanctuary and Serari Dam. Thus, South Rajasthan can boast of ten important bird areas. To all these, two more Todgarh-Raoli and Bassi can be added that is home to a huge variety of water and other kinds of bird. No less than 242 bird species have been sighted in Udaipur region.

Out of them, about 102 species are water birds and the remaining ones belong to the categories that live on earth and trees. About 150 species of migratory birds visit the lakes of Udaipur and neighboring area during the winter season. The district has its own identity as the sight of a large number birds of different species and wild animals can be seen easily. When in the months of October November as winter sets in, the number suddenly goes up.

Udaipurites who are lucky enough to be able to watch a good number of migratory birds in the winter season are often curious to know why the birds leave their country and come all the way to distant India. From the European countries and North Asian that become extremely cold during winter, they fly thousands of km away. At home, on the surface of winter bodies, there is snow, as also on the ground. The result is that the insects and the fishes that the birds feed on, either die or hibernate till the end of the winter season. In the absence of easy availability of food the birds fly long distance and migrate to countries that are warm, where lakes do not freeze and there is ample supply of food. In countries like India at that time summer season is just over and monsoon sets in. The lakes are almost full and there is greenery all around. So, food is available in plenty. Migratory birds live and lay eggs in Europe and Russia during summer, experts tell us. As the days are long they get enough time to hatch their eggs. Food is also available in good quantity, so the chicks grow faster.

How these migratory birds passing through narrow passages make their way without being hindered by obstacles?

In the case of animals, when they move forward, they feel that objects that are near them seem to come close to them faster than those which are far. Similarly, birds ensure that the pictures of objects on their both sides are in keeping with their speed and then they feel secure.

To save energy for long flights, migratory birds start accumulating fats in their body months in advance in the summer season. Another interesting thing about such birds is that they fly only during the night and rest in the day as to avoid human disturbances and for safety. They fly continuously without any break. During long journeys, they fly in a V-formation or line. When one feels tired it takes a position at the back and is replaced by one who is fresh. Bar-headed goose is a migratory bird that can fly at the highest level that is 10-12 km from the ground. Flying at such a height where there is little oxygen and temperature is minus fifty degree Celsius it reaches Udaipur and other places in Mewar region and Rajasthan. The amazing thing is that they sleep in the air while flying overseas and oceans. Their brain sleeps while their muscles keep functioning covering a distance about 5000 km at the rate of 500-600 km per day, they reach Udaipur to add to the beauty of the water bodies. The longest journey of 11,000 km from North pole to South pole from the Arctic to Antarctica is undertaken by the bird named Arctic Turn. Out of the about 150 species migrating birds that come to Udaipur every year 170 were spotted in the Bird Fair held in December last year.

One can easily sight some common residents birds of Udaipur region like Common Coot (Tikadi), Little Grebe (Chhoti Dubdubi), Painted Stork (Jhanghil), Black-necked Stork (Luharjang, Asian Openbrill (Ghonghil), Woolly-necked Stork (Haji Laglag), Great White Pelican (Safed Hawasil), Black-headed Ibis (Kala Bujja)., Black Ibis (Kala Bujja), Greater Flamingo (Bada Hansawar), Red –wattled Lapwing (Titcahri), Little Cormant (Choota Pawan Kauva), Common Hoopoe (Hudhudid), Short-eared Owl (Chhot Kanna Ullu), Egyptian Vulture (Safed Giddh) and White-browed Fantail (Safed Nachni) in summer can be seen Indian Pitta (Desi Naurang), Rosy Starling (Gulab Mainn) etc. Winter visitors include Bar- headed Gouse (Seenkhpar), Pintail (Neessar), Red-chested Pochard (Chhoti Murgbi) etc.

It is perhaps worthwhile for bird lovers to know where bird watching can be done. Built by Picchu Banjara, Pichola the biggest and the most famous lake of the town is one of the places where a large number of birds of various species can be sighted. Babool and other bushes are suitable for resident birds to build nests for breeding after monsoon season. It is fascinating to watch nests of Open Bill Stork during the breeding season. Nest colonies of Egret and Heron species in areas close to the lakes are also a sight worth watching. Fatehsagar built by Maharana Jaisingh and renovated by Maharana Fatehsingh is another huge lake good for bird watching, especially near Rani Road where winter is not very deep and there are trees where birds can build nests. However, the noise of motor boats that disturbs the peace is a negative factor. Connected with Picchola lake is Rangsagar lake built by the erstwhile Maharanas and Swarup Sagar built by Maharana Swami Singh are other spots suitable for watching birds of various species. So also Jal Burz and Kalka Mota Nursery near Doodh Talai. This year early in November about 600 birds of different species such as Schoveller, Common Pochard, Pintail Common Teal Ibis, Common Coot, and Spotted Dove were spotted in Roop Sagar and Badi Lake near Udaipur. Rajsamand that overflowed this time after 8 years also had a good number of birds.

In lakes near Udaipur such as Ghasa, Mavli, Kadla Losing, Nandeshwar, Bhatewar can also be seen birds in large numbers. The lakes near Menar also attract a huge number of birds of several species. Dhand Talab has been a home to over 600 Grey-leg geese that have come from a distance of 6000 km. The special feature of lakes near Menar is that the villagers do not use the lake water for irrigation and do not allow people to pollute it. Groups of young men not only guide the tourists but also provide horses to them. They have put up tents for the tourists to stay in very intelligently they have found a new way of caring morning and at the same time promoting tourism.

Udaipurities can now drive some 25 to 50 km away from the city, have an exciting close view of beautiful birds and spend an enjoyable day.

Ghats of Udaipur

Dhobi ghat
nathi ghat
maharaja ghat
panchdevariya ghat

rovniya ghat
hattha pol ghat
rovniya ghat

naav ghat

gangaur ghat

bharat ji, radhavallabh ji, waali bai

How To Enjoy A Day Outing With Lets Trip Cycle Tours In Udaipur?

“When you are in doubt, just pedal it out.”

Willing to work for something and taking it to new heights was not only a dream but also a risk factor for Bhawani and Dushyant while bringing up their venture – Lets Trip Cycle Tours.

Started as a trial, together now they run a recognised bicycle holiday company that is one of its kind based in Udaipur but slowly turning its way in different regions of India as well.

And, after knowing about their interesting concept, we had our conversation with co-founder Bhawani that what’s LetsTrip.in is all about and why people should be aware of it.

Since, how long Lets Trip is letting people enjoy Bicycle tours?

Fateh Sagar

“We started doing bicycle tours in October 2015 from Udaipur, and now we have slowly expanded to various other cities. We have two kinds of tours. First, we have day tours in Udaipur, Jaipur, Pushkar, Leh Ladakh and Panchgani (Maharashtra), which are of 2 to 3 hours and are perfect for travellers on a fixed ride nary. For example, a tour in outskirts of Udaipur includes pick up and drop to the hotel, packed breakfast, drinking water, a backup vehicle to follow the tour. And, this tour costs INR 2000 per person.

Second, we plan custom cycling holiday, which varies from 2 to 10 days, this includes cycling plus accommodation at jungle lodges, camps, palaces and forts. And, no doubt, it is one of the best things to experience when in Rajasthan.”

What was the niche to set up Let’s Trip Cycle Tours?

lets trip bicycle tours udaipur

“We studied together in a boarding school, Mayo College, Ajmer. And, since childhood, we have always talked about doing something together. But as we grew up life took Dushyant to Delhi and me to Udaipur.

And, it seemed like the plan had failed, but in 2014 we came back together somehow and started working for a small travel company in Udaipur, we worked there for a year discussing every day what we can do together as the 9 – 5 job seemed dull.

One day we had a query for an activity for a couple, and we thought of doing a bicycle tour ourselves, so we borrowed a few bicycles from few of our friends & conducted a tour. By seeing the guests review and reaction, we knew this is what we wanted to do. So, in October 2015 we took our step by starting Let’s Trip.”

What were the initial challenges that your tour company faced more often?

“Getting people to understand this concept was a major problem. There was very less support from our families, as making a cycling holiday company is not a conventional way for full time to fit in today’s scenario and that too after quitting a job.

We still have relatives who ask us what we do and when we tell them, they want to know what we do for income as cycling is considered just a sport or a leisure activity.

lets trip cycle tour

Initially, we went to a few banks to get a loan of just 1 lakh rupee, but none of them understood and believed in our business idea. But, now Let’s Trip has become a success, and banks are happy to lend us any amount of money to buy bicycles.

Another challenge was there was no set of norms or guidelines for something based on this concept in India. There are no instructions available till date on how to run a business like ours. We had to learn everything from our experiences and mistakes.

There are a million gestures and safety instructions that we need to follow while riding a bicycle. Then, there are things, which you can learn from the Internet, but they only apply to the European countries or America, but practically don’t work here. Getting the travel agents to understand what the idea is? Was another huge challenge!”

How can an individual choose cycle tours according to their convenience?

Army area lets trip cycling

“All the tours we conduct are easy to moderate level of difficulty. The bicycles we use are best in the world and come with a gear system, so they are quite easy to ride.

We analysed a few foreign travel companies who do cycling, and in all of them before booking, you had to know proper cycling, but we have tailored our tours in such a way that you don’t need to be a cyclist to ride with us. No reason should stop people from seeing the real beauty of Udaipur or any other city.

We have a backup vehicle on each tour so you can rest your mind at ease that there is help available whenever the need comes. For the long tours of Rajasthan, we make the itineraries and routes as per the capacity of the guests; we get people who want to ride 30 km a day and also individuals who want to ride 100 km a day.”

Do you tend to organise exclusive tours according to seasons, or based on people’s demand?

lets trip tours

“Our tours run an entire year, we have options, which vary from a basic sunrise tour, which is 20 km to a Lake’s loop, which covers Pichola, Fateh Sagar, Badi Lake and the countryside of Udaipur, and is of 30 km. Then, we also do customised tours of any desired distance.

We have an exclusive trail that we call the extreme mountain biking trail, which is a magical place to ride in, no cars can go there, you can either walk or ride a horse or a bicycle on that trail. This trail is mainly enjoyable in the monsoons, and no one in Udaipur knows about it apart from us.”

What’s the best thing that one can count as USP of Lets Trip Cycle Tours?

trips by lets trip

“Contrary to popular belief, we do not touch any typical sightseeing spots of the city (unless the guest’s requests). We tend to reveal the hidden and not so famous places, which deserve a wider audience as compared to an old city and central locations. So, our tours mostly highlight the countryside of Udaipur.

In general, an adventure tour company asks certain questions of being known to such kind of activities. They show all the dangers involved in cycling and recommend not do the activity if you feel scared. But at Let’s Trip, we first build your confidence through our teaching sessions and never refuse anyone to cherish the journey.”

Till date which tour has been unique and most admirable one in the entire journey of Let’s Trip?

“We perform day outings almost every day in many cities now and also do all Rajasthan tours, and we try our best to make each trip the best one yet, so we can not say or justify only one as the most admirable.”

Apart from Foreigners, do Indian travellers are also taking an interest in joining bicycle tours?

trips and tour by lets trip

“When we started, there were about 5% of Indian clients, but now we have around 35% of Indian customers. The local travellers are now taking an interest in such activities and the youth, in general, is moving towards a fitter and better world, so people want to explore and get associated with adventurous activities.

Rajasthan, in general, is known for its heritage and culture, and we are trying real hard to make it recognised for Adventure. One of the best routes for cycling in the world is the way from Udaipur to Jodhpur, taking a few night stops at some places. It’s such a magical ride, and we believe everyone should do it once in their lifetime.

Riding a bicycle itself does 50% of the work, people get to see beautiful sights and experience the real beat of India on a bicycle, the whole idea of going to a place they did not know about is fun for them, we try our best to provide all services required by the guest.

people at lets trip tours

We get Indian families where the mother is riding after 30 years or a child who has never done cycling before, and we tried to make everything safe for them during a trip. When it comes to a cyclist, they will find us, but we want to make a non-cyclist understand that they can also go for it.”

So, any upcoming cycle tours or plans that you are looking for to entertain people with?

lets trip cycle tours lake city

“We want to start cycle tours all over India, we have already begun in 5 places, and there are many more cities in our plan, we are not focusing on just taking Let’s Trip to a higher pace, but we want cycling, in general, to rise in India. We have such a beautiful country and cycling is the best way to explore it, but the lack of awareness and dedication to adventure is the biggest problem. Sometimes we have guests who tell us that they were shocked to know that they could take a bicycle tour in India. That’s why with a perspective to change it, we want travellers to come to India and experience adventure the same way they experience culture and heritage. And, yes on the way to achieving all this we want to become the biggest cycling holiday company in India.”

Are you a cycling enthusiast? If Yes! Then, here you have an option to take a ride and memorise your childhood on bicycles. And, to know more about the exclusive tours offered by Let’s Trip, you can find them on Facebook and Instagram. Also, you can visit their website http://letstrip.in/ to experience your journey in a fit and adventurous way.

The Street Art in Udaipur

Rajasthan is distinguished for its famous style of paintings which include murals and miniature paintings. The wall murals found in Udaipur are truly marvelous- from graffiti to traditional- everything can be found on the street walls of the city. Palaces, Havelis, streets, buildings, all are covered with these amazing arts. Multitudes of murals greet you, and many of them vary from being painted recently, to those which are quite old found within the beautiful interiors of the palaces, temples, etc.

These exquisite murals found adorning the walls of the city are a thing to watch.  Well, these are specifically found in the ‘Old-City’ of Udaipur. Some are modern arts made by the travelers who come to Udaipur while some of them are made by the city dwellers. Many of them are also made under the ‘Beautification’ process of the city.

Know about the Street Art in Udaipur:

The Traditional Rajputana Art: The Decorative Wall Paintings

Ever thought why these elephants, men, and women are made on our streets? Just to look beautiful? No, there is also some significance behind the traditional art form.

There are a plethora of Rajputana paintings in which a common theme is found throughout. Rajputana artwork is a great manipulation of space. The insertion of fuller spaces is meant to emphasize the lack of boundaries and inseparability of characters and landscapes. In this way, the individuality of physical characters is almost rejected, allowing both the portrayed backgrounds and human figurines to be equally vivid.street art in udaipur

In ancient times Mewar rulers wanted paintings and wall murals to portray their determination, establishing their heritage. Hence, paintings were often indicative of a king’s legacy or their changes made to better the society.

As a mark of beautification, whether during festivals or marriage ceremonies or simply otherwise, these paintings are done on the outside walls of houses and buildings. They display colorful and elaborate portraits of men, women, elephants, horses, riders and deities.street art in udaipur

Both recent and historical paintings can be seen on the walls of the city. Walking down narrow streets of Udaipur’s old city is alike wandering in an art gallery. Whitewashed house walls make canvases for local and foreign artists, who draw cows and elephants, or princely men and women with beautiful clothes or something totally different like some graffiti or abstract art. Most often, the traditional paintings adorn the entrances of houses. They are believed to create a harmonious ambiance, to seek spiritual guidance and cut off evil. Many are decorated with tiny mirrors or mosaic.street art in udaipur

Embellishing the Walls of Udaipur: The Modern Street Art

While there are plenty of traditional arts on the streets of Udaipur, the old city is also decorated by modern arts like graffiti by foreign travelers who come here from various parts of the world and leave a mark on the City. Some of them are quotations written on the walls of restaurants while some are typical abstract art that is very alluring to watch.

The Painted Peacock Project

One of the wall mural, somewhere near the Chandpol Bridge is the most famous in the city. It was made by 4-5 women artist from New Zealand. The women came here under a special task The Painted Peacock Project, a trip that aimed at sharing knowledge with local children in need and teaching them the art of stenciling, painting and jewelry making.

A lot of people do not know this fact that the painting was initially made by a stencil and then faired out. Interesting!!!

For people who are missing out on what Graffiti is, these are writings or drawings that have been scribbled, scratched, or painted on a wall or other surface, often within public view.

Another quite famous wall painting is at Ambrai Ghat, made by Action Udaipur under the beautification process, making the worn out walls of Udaipur beautiful and worth staring! No doubt the mural at Ambrai is remarkable; the use of bright colors on a pale peach wall embosses the painting. The grandness of the Action Udaipur wall mural is mesmeric and entices a lot of people to click.

A huge art at the Zostel is one that can mesmerize any onlooker. These murals are timeless marks on the walls that represent diverse culture and inhabitance on the globe. These have also become a spot for unmatched photos and selfies for the localities and tourists.street art in udaipur

The streets of Udaipur are ornamented with unparalleled art that is admired by many residents and tourists as well. Indeed all such arts and elements of beauty attract a lot of tourism to our city.

8 days, 5000 clicks, several videos: ‘A SUMMER IN UDAIPUR’

Udaipur is like a peaceful dream; a place called the City of Lakes amidst the land of sand, a city against all the odds. The very soul of the city was captured in a recent video clip named ‘A SUMMER IN UDAIPUR.’ It is the first of its kind video of Udaipur. It is a short clip of 3 minutes and 41 seconds delineating an arousing story of the city.

A mesh of inventive ideas, striking visuals, seamless editing, and the comforting soundtrack is what ‘A Summer in Udaipur’ is all about.

A SUMMER IN UDAIPUR

The sound of chirruping birds, people talking, the waves of the lakes and grandeur of the royalty of the city; A Summer in Udaipur expresses how beautiful can a place look even in the most parched and dried state of India. The city indeed is shown as a masterwork by the hands of nature. The video starts with a glimpse of a typical Rajasthani couple riding a bike. As the video finds its course, one can witness an immense aesthetic appeal. The soundtrack of the clip makes it all the more surreal. The video concludes on a quick note, leaving a mystical essence that compels the onlooker to press play again.

A SUMMER IN UDAIPUR
The Man Behind A SUMMER IN UDAIPUR- Ayush Dinker

The young and talented Ayush Dinker from Delhi is the artist behind the appealing and involving short clip shot on a trip through Udaipur and completed over the course of a month. He also runs a youtube channel named ‘Ethereal.’ Ayush traveled for more than a week through every nook and corner of the city along with UdaipurBlog’s Team from the morning before the dawn till evening, while working on this project.

A SUMMER IN UDAIPUR
A Still From The Video

The footage of ‘A SUMMER IN UDAIPUR’ was captured with a GoPro, Canon 6D Camera, Flycam Stabilizer, a microphone and three different lenses. The stills for the hyper lapses were shot handheld. The video is a mixture of match edits, in-camera effects, some hyper lapses, compositing shots and small video clips. Crash zooms, back-time cuts, picture inverses and light effects were also added to add a dramatic touch between the cuts. The real challenge was of stitching all these shots together while maintaining a fluid movement of the footage.

Nearly 5000 clicks and numerous clips and hyper lapses were taken during Ayush’s visit to the city of lakes. He traveled with our teammates to various parts of the city covering every little detail. Facing some troubles too, the video came out to be a spectacular one.

As per Ayush, whenever he used to hear about Rajasthan, he would think of some of the obvious places and the sweeping desert. He perceived Udaipur to be a small city which he knew less about.A SUMMER IN UDAIPUR

He further expresses his sight of the city as, in his words, “The moment I sat down beside Lake Pichola on a summer evening, I knew this place is beautiful with a flavor unmatched in this world. The vast expanse of a number of lakes and the magnificent palaces huddled with narrow city lanes is a synthesis to make you a guest here. No doubt the hotels are soaring high for the best view. Whether the city has any more romance left is for you to conclude.”

The video has achieved soaring views of about 250k on Facebook alone and is still a trending video in Udaipur.

A visually compelling masterpiece takes time, patience, dedication, talent, creative vision, and a lot of hard work. ‘A Summer in Udaipur’ can indeed elevate your senses and make you love your city even more. Have a look at the video

Doodh Talai – Uniquely Defined Water Source

Being a travel freak and exploring historical places keeps your mind storming with the various thoughts all the time. And, when it’s about our Udaipur, the city never fails to astound endless magical history that is covered with the lakes and water sources that are present in and around the city. But what’s more interesting is the uniqueness of their names. Like, Fateh Sagar is named after Maharana Fateh Singh (Mewar dynasty) and Udaipur itself has got its name because of Maharana Udai Singh of Sisodia Clan of Rajput. Same in the series there is centrally located small water pond in the heart of the city, i.e. Doodh Talai (Dudh Talai).

Name and Origination:

doodh talai

Do you ever think that why it is called as Doodh Talai? People in Lake City have subjected many stories behind the name and origination of this water source. But, according to the old citizens, Doodh Talai (A small Milk pond) fulfilled the basic needs of cows that were present in government cow shelters (Raajakeey Goshalas) that carry through the requirement of milk in heritage kitchen. Later on, the dairy was shifted to Goverdhan Vilas area from where the animals were brought daily on grazing, drinking water, and for bathing purpose in Dudh Talai. Hence, it can be concluded that this unique, freshwater reservoir was primarily meant for the Royal concern.

Sites to Explore:

From the location viewpoint, Doodh Talai is located quite near the centre of the Udaipur. And, shares a common link road with another point Lake Pichola. Basically known for its compact and managed shape, it is surrounded by small hillocks that host:

  1. Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyay Park (Rock Garden or Musical Fountain Garden)
  2. Manikya Lal Verma Garden
  3. The Ropeway
  4. Lake Pichola
  5. Jungle Safari (3.5 km)

Because of scenic greenery, and different tourist attractions it is the famous spot in Udaipur to explore while travelling. One can also enjoy the fast food counters, camel and horse ride, and boat ride at the same location.

Manikya Lal Verma Garden

Manikya Lal Verma Garden

The Manikya Lal Verma Park (also known as Doodh Talai Garden), offers a glorious view of Lake Pichola and Doodh Talai. It was constructed in the year 1995 by Nagar Parishad (Municipal Council) Udaipur and was named after Manikya Lal Verma (Former Chief Minister of Rajasthan).
