4th Annual Convocation of IIM Udaipur

IIM Udaipur, 21 March 2016 – The Indian Institute of Management Udaipur (IIMU) held its 4th annual convocation on Monday, 21 March, 2016 at the MLSU auditorium, Sukhadia University Campus, Udaipur.

Dr. Pankaj R Patel, Chairperson of the Board of Governors of the Institute, and Chairman of  Zydus Cadila delivered the welcome address. He stated that this batch of students have made the institute proud through their various activities and initiatives in the international arena. He mentioned that this is indeed a special occasion as this is the last convocation ceremony being held at MLSU campus which is a temporary campus and that the next events will be at the new 300 acre campus.

Mr. Rajan Bharti Mittal, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Bharti Enterprises, was the Chief Guest and delivered the convocation address. He congratulated the students on this joyous occasion and urged the passing batch to be sensitive to the society at large. He spoke about the challenges that he had to face during the license raj era and how liberalization has eased up many of those challenges. But he also mentioned that current generation faces a different set of challenges all together. The current fast paced environment requires managers to think differently and cited examples of a few global startups which did things that were unimaginable a couple of decades ago. He appreciated the college for its unique vision and encouraged the students to be quite involved with the society at large.

Prof. Janat Shah, Director of the Institute, delivered the concluding address. He congratulated everyone on the convocation of yet another batch and mentioned that the transformation in students over the last couple of years is very encouraging.Prof. Shah told how being a manager can give an opportunity to impact many lives and in turn the nation as well and urged the passing batch of students to be on the forefront of this journey.

The occasion was graced by the members of the Board of Governors of the Institute and other dignitaries from Udaipur. A total of 120 graduating students of IIMU’s Post Graduate Programme and 10 students of IIMU’s Post Graduate Programme for Executives received diploma at this year’s convocation.

Audacity’16, the cultural festival of IIM Udaipur begins on 30th Jan

Bank of Baroda presents Audacity’16, the cultural festival of IIM Udaipur on 30-31 January 2016 at MLSU campus.

The two day long cultural extravaganza will feature 50 events including competitions in categories: fashion showdance, musicdramatics, arts, photography, lan gaming, chess, poker, carom, quizzes, debate and more. Audacity’16 will also feature Live in concert show by Euphoria Band’s (Dr. Palash Sen’s band and Maeri-Maeri song fame) who will mesmerize the crowd with its electrifying performance on PRONITE (31st Jan, 6 PM Onwards). It also showcases a classical evening in association with SPIC MACAY which will feature Pt. Shubhendra Rao (sitar) and Saskia De Haas Rao (cello) from 5 PM onwards on 30th. For the first time, Udaipur will have Miss India’s West Zone auditions as Campus Princess Competition at Audacity’16. The beauties of Udaipur will descend on the Audacity’s stage to showcase their talent and will be judged by Miss India 2014 Koyal Rana on 30th Jan 2015. The winner will get 3months grooming school training and direct entry to Mumbai auditions.

This year Audacity’16 is introducing Chef-E-Udaipur competition in association with The Yellow Chilli (Sanjeev Kapoor’s chain of restaurants opened recently in Udaipur). It will pit the most innovative part-time cookers against seasoned chef’s to cook unique dishes from the given ingredients in the stipulated time to win the hearts of the Top Chef coming from The Yellow Chilli.

The participants of Audacity’16 which will come from different colleges all over Udaipur and other cities will have a chance to win prizes worth up to 3 Lacs. This time participants will have a chance for a free workshop on arts and music as well.

Audacity’16 as part of IIM Udaipur is conscious about its responsibility towards the society and hence is doing a Tree Plantation Drive on 26th Jan in collaboration with PUKAAR Group at MLSU campus at 9 AM in the morning. This will embark Audacity on a path of social causes which it will promote every year through different means.

Through this year’s theme ‘Lets Retro’, Audacity will go back in time through its unique rules of using retro theme songs, dance moves, art style, dresses and more. The ambience of the IIM Udaipur will showcase multiple retro styled interiors and vintage stuff.

Samvaah: IIM Udaipur’s Marketing Conclave, 2014

Samvaah– The first edition of the annual Marketing Conclave of IIM Udaipur was hosted on 15th November, 2014 at the institute.

Samvaah is a student driven initiative that was conceived and organized by MarClan- the Marketing Club of IIMU. Samvaah, in sync with its name’s translation- “Marketplace” is an initiative to bring together marketing enthusiasts from academia, the local community and industry alike, to share insights and discuss the various developments in the field of marketing.

The umbrella theme for Samvaah 2014 was “Rethink: Changing Marketing Practices with Changing Times”.

The run-up to the event saw numerous online and on-campus competitions being held, with teams from the best B-schools across the country competing in terms of creativity, talent and marketing potential.

The event kicked off with a digital media workshop by Mr. Amit Tripathi- the CEO of Ideate Labs. The workshop began with a very intriguing statement: ‘Welcome to the funeral of digital media…’ and then went on to discuss how being digital has gone beyond just media channels like Facebook and twitter, to become all pervasive in other walks of life as well. Mr. Tripathi left the students with two important insights: that simplicity and finding common ground between the company and the consumer, are the mantra to successful marketing.

The Sales Workshop that followed had the speakers- Mr. Martand Shukla, ASM of Pepsico and Mr. Bharat Nagori, one of the largest distributors in Udaipur, emphasize that profitability and availability were the major requirements of a good sales campaign, while reiterating the importance of considering sentiment and market experience while designing a sales and distribution strategy.

The next session included the finals of Juxtapose-a brand extension competition which saw students from IIM Indore (Mumbai Campus), SPJIMR and two teams from IIM Udaipur, do their best to impress the judges with the innovativeness and clarity of their ideas, with team WarClan of IIM Udaipur eventually winning the first prize. The judges also shared very unique insights on proper segmenting and positioning of the product, with the audience.

The post lunch session began with an address by Prof. Janat Shah-Director, IIM Udaipur. Prof. Shah laid emphasis on the three main focus areas of IIMU, namely research, transformation through the MBA program and integration with the local community, all of which were the driving factors behind the organization of Samvaah.

The event ended with a felicitation of the speakers and a vote of thanks. IIMU’s first marketing conclave was a resounding success with speakers and participants alike, appreciating the seamless organization of the entire event and the insights they gained through the discussions.

IIM Udaipur has always laid a strong emphasis on integrating with the local community and continuing this initiative, the conclave saw 65 participants from various institutes around Udaipur being part of the event. The first marketing conclave of IIM Udaipur indeed was a wonderful experience for all the participants and also helped the institute build a stronger relationship with both the industry and the community of Udaipur.

The Leadership Summit 2014 hosted at IIM Udaipur

Indian Institute Management Udaipurhosted the third edition of its annual flagship event, The Leadership Summit 2014 on 23rd August, 2014 at the Durbar Hall, City Palace, Udaipur.

The Leadership Summit is a student-driven initiative which is organized by the Media and Industry Cell (MiiC) of IIMU. The event serves as a platform for corporate leaders to share their opinions and views on select themes through diverse engaging panel discussions. The panelists comprise of distinguished leaders from industries and academia. The objective of the summit is to get unique insights from the leaders and get to understand the direction in which the economies, corporate policy making and businesses are heading viz-a-viz globalization and competition.The first two editions of The Leadership Summit have been immensely successful.

The umbrella theme for the Leadership Summit 2014 was “RETHINK: A paradigm shift in the Leadership Trends of India“.

The event began with a Welcome Address by Prof. Janat ShahDirector, IIM Udaipur. Prof. Shah laid emphasis on the initiatives on which the institute has a strong focus such as Immersion, Research, Analytics, Entrepreneurship and Social Responsibility.

IIMU successfully hosted the second edition of its annual HR Conclave – Spandan 2014

Indian Institute of ManagementUdaipur successfully hosted the second edition of its annual HR Conclave – Spandan 2014 on 3rd August2014 at Hotel Radisson Blu, Udaipur.

Carrying forward the legacy from the last year’s inception of Spandan, this year’s conclave was conceptualized around the central umbrella theme, “Rethink: Changing HR practices with Changing Times”. The event began with an opening address by Prof. Janat ShahDirector, IIM Udaipur. He spoke on the importance of collaboration of academia and industry on a common platform like Spandan for discussions critical for the reinvention of the HR Industry. Prof. Shah also laid stress on the IIMU’s strong focus on Research, Analytics, Immersion in the three forms of Rural, Corporate & Global Immersion and Entrepreneurship & Intrapreneurship in his speech. He also threw light on the student driven initiatives through different clubs and committees at IIMU citing the example of Spandan been organized entirely by dHRuvaThe HR Club of IIM Udaipur.

Prof. Sunil MaheshwariAdjunct Faculty, IIM Ahmedabad and Ex-Advisor to the HRD Ministry, Govt. of India, served as the Keynote Speaker in the conclave. Prof. Maheshwari brought in his research statistics in his speech which showcased the changing trends in HR and the challenges posed to it in the current scenario. His mathematical study was based on a survey on leadership traits collected from a sample of MDP candidates who occupy top leadership positions in India and the persistent need-gap analysis in their skills. He concluded his speech with mentioning the importance of investment in faculty development and pedagogy modification with time in management schools.

The event then proceeded with panel discussions on the three sub-themes for the summit:

The key things highlighted in the discussions were usage of social media in employee engagement & networking, technology, communication, feedback and references. Traits of a leader, differentiation between a leader and a follower, main hindrances in current leadership development and initiatives and strategies in different industries taken for leadership development, were also focused in the discussions. Organizations strive towards adopting best HR practices and to align HR strategies with the organizational strategies to succeed in the long run. Hence, the emerging practices like pyramid organizational structures and change management were also brought in the discussions by the panelists.

The interactions were enhanced by the questions put up by the students and faculties in the audience during the panel discussions. The event was very well received by the IIMU community. Kathan 2014, the second edition of the annual HR magazine of dHRuva – The HR Club of IIM Udaipur was also released marking the success of the event. The event concluded with the felicitation of the eminent speakers of the event and a vote of thanks.

IIM Udaipur aims to set new benchmarks in the field of management education and research and events like this come under the channel of initiatives aiming to create a platform for discussing subjects and issues that are most relevant to the current times and future trends.

The underlying purpose of the event is to bridge the gap between the industry and academics providing students with an opportunity to understand the dynamics of HR domain and to enrich the knowledge and perception of HR practices from the interactions with the experienced corporate leaders.
