About Muharram: The Month of Sacrifice

muharram image

Muharram is not a particular day, but a whole month that marks the beginning of Islamic New Year. It is one of the 4 months that are defined as holy month in Islamic calendar and the other three are Dhul-Qa’adah, Dhul-Hijjah and Rajab. Muharram derived from the word ‘haram’, which means ‘forbidden’. Hence, it is considered unlawful to fight during this month. Fasting is advised in the month of Muharram.  It is believed that The Prophet has said: “The best fasts after the fasts of Ramadan are those of the month of Muharram.” Although the fasts of the month of Muharram are not obligatory, yet one who fasts in these days out of his own will is entitled to a great reward by Allah Almighty. Fasting on the tenth day of Muharram, called Ashura, is particularly important, as it supposed to lead to great rewards. A person does not have to fast for the whole month. On the contrary, each fast during this month has merit.

The month of Muharram is also associated with many auspicious events in Islamic history. Some of them are:

  1. Allah is supposed to have created the heavens and the earth on this blessed day.
  2. On this day He give His infinite blessings and bounties to many of His Prophets and delivered them from the clutches of their enemies.
  3. Allah created Hazrat Adam (First man on the earth) in this month and pardoned him of his mistake.
  4. Hazrat Noah’s Ark landed successfully on Mount Judi during this time centuries ago.
  5. Allah is also said to have saved Hazrat Ibrahim from fire and
  6. Allah rescued Hazrat Musa from the Pharaoh during the month of Muharram.

One must be wondering what there is to mourn about then?

The tenth day of Muharram or Youm-e-Ashura is of supreme importance for Shia Muslims as they commemorate the death anniversary of Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. While talking about Muharram how one can forget the tragedy of Karbala. In the month of Muharram many centuries ago, (approximately 680 A.D.), an event took place in Iraq at a place known as Karbala.

Imam Husain’s martyrdom at Kerbala represents a conscious confrontation with anti-Islamic forces and a courageous resistance for a sacred cause. The tragedy was that the one who stood up to defend Islam was cut down in so cruel a manner. It is for this reason that the death of Imam Husain is mourned annually in the Muslim world.
During these days their are regular lessons about how a man can follow good path and people are taught about the Martyr of Karbala.

Peace & Many Blessings Towards All…. ♥

Notebook+ : An Innovative Tool for Engineering Aspirants

Notebook+

Engineering has become the profession of choice for every student that has scored good marks in 10thboards. You can hold your degree in hands in a shorter period of time compared to other professions and also get a promising job with best payments and perks. The growing desires of students to get selected in best of engineering colleges, which will mark their first step towards a bright career, has made the entrance exams a cut throat competition. Every correct answer confirms your gate pass to IITs, VITs, NIITs, etc. and so aspirants need to excel in every subject and every topic.

Who can better understand the mental state, the confusion and problems these students face than those who have themselves gone through this phase and made their way to IIT itself. 3 students in final year of IIT started a company named “Plancess”. The interesting thing is that one of those 3 students named Nitesh Salvi is from our Udaipur City. 🙂 With an idea of refining student’s preparations, they designed “Notebook+”- set of 3 books that perfectly cover Physics, Chemistry and Maths.

Now you must be thinking of the reason behind naming it “Notebook+” and not only Notebook. Well, that’s because, this Notebook not only allows you to write in it but also sharpens your memory with the important formulas/equations/reactions that are printed at the bottom of each page. It works on a simple fact that anything which passes in front of your eyes repeatedly and many a times gets imprinted in your grey matter for a longer period of time. These 3 “Notebook+” serves as a reservoir of 600 and more important formulas and reactions. Using them continuously will help you memorize these formulas and you can solve any question or numerical in almost no time.

Prudhvi Tej Immadi (AIR-1 in IIT-JEE 2011) is currently pursuing his engineering in IIT Bombay. He says that “Notebook+” is a very helpful tool that is sure to add an extra knowledge in every student that uses it. He finds the definition of Notebook changing from “something in which you can write” to “a book in which you can write as well as learn from it”.

Tinted by Tradition – Waswo X. Waswo & Rajesh Soni

City Palace Museum Exhibition

Pramod Kumar KG of New Delhi based museum consultancy Eka curates an exhibition of Hand-colored Photographs at Bhagwat Prakash Photo Gallery inside the premises of City Palace Museum to revive the synapse between painting and photography.  Scheduled to be inaugurated on 25th of this month at 09:35 am, “Tinted by Tradition” will continue till March 31, 2012.

This exposition puts up the age old tradition of adding a layer of color to the printed photographic image that finds its birth in the early years of the invention of modern photography in 1839. It displays the works of Waswo X. Waswo and Rajesh Soni that has been inspired from the large oeuvre of work maintained at Pictorial Archives of Maharanas of Mewar. Waswo’s digitally printed studio portraits have been hand coloured by Rajesh Soni, an artist with his roots in Udaipur, whose grandfather Prabhu Lal Verma was a well known artist-photographer in the court of Maharana Bhupal Singh. Waswo says of his work, “In Udaipur I hoped to revisit the territory of late 19th century and 20th century photography, both paying homage to, and also playfully mocking, the genre as practiced by foreign ethnographers and Indian Studio portraitists alike.”

City Palace Museum has always caught hold of many eyes with its holdings of rich culture and archives that take you in a journey to the past, a journey inside the royalties and culture of Mewar kings. The Bhagwat Prakash Photo Gallery was established in the Zenana Mehal present within the courtyards of City Palace Museum in March 2009 that endures the Pictorial Archives of the Maharanas of Mewar. These arrays of photographic materials are made available for research scholars, and through various exhibitions for the tourists visiting museum and also for wider community.

Hotel Bhindar

We feel immensely pleasured to introduce to you The Bhindar Rajmahal– the 434 years old Palace belonging to the ancestry of Maharana Shakti Singh; now renovated into a beautiful splendid hotel. The biggest attraction of the hotel is, being in its inaugural time; it’s somewhat more affordable to the commons as compared to the other heritage hotels of the city.

The hotel provides a perfect blend of chivalric culture and natural ecstasy in the country soil. Apart from the currently available 14 deluxe rooms and 6 suites, the palace also has an outhouse situated in a large lush green farm, bordered by a private seasonal lake. The mountains are just on their toes and the air is of utmost peace and beauty. You can always find 5 beautiful horses available for the liveliest experience of horse-riding amidst the terrain.

While the proper service of the customers is personally taken care of by the Director herself; activities like trekking, jeep safari, horse-riding, yoga, tent camping, cooking classes of the local delicacies and musical nights for the traditional taste are also organized.

With a young management always ready to design a playful beauty of an exquisite contrast, you can also have DJ Parties arranged in the open spaces on a single call.

Being the Brand Ambassador of UNICEF, Waka Waka girl Shakira also visited SIERT where she met the rural girls and motivated them to get educated and achieve high positions in the society. When she reached at the place, small girls dressed in traditional ‘Lehangas’ welcomed her according to Rajasthani Culture. Despite of being such a famous celebrity, she easily got mixed up with the school girls. She even danced with them and answered each and every question very politely. Girls also sang many folk songs for Shakira and Shakira also encouraged them by clapping and dancing with them.
