Cycle Yatra: A trip to our roots of Culture and Nature

THE SWAPATHGAMI CYCLE YATRA LEFT UDAIPUR ON JAN 9, 2011. They will return on the 13th. There were 17 yatris from Rajasthan, MP, Maharashtra, Delhi, Mysore, Gujarat, UP. Many were students of Swaraj University. Several yatris dressed up as animals such as polar bear, penguin, tiger, elephant, etc to raise attention to the global warming and climate change issues. The yatra was organized by Shikshantar.

Cycle Yatra

For those who are new to the cycle yatra idea, it is a weeklong cycle trip into rural Rajasthan. What sets this trip apart from a general cycle trip is that we do not carry any money, electronic gadgets, food or first aid medicines with us. We stop at villages along the route and find work to earn our board and lodge.

While each participant’s learning and experience from such a trip is unique, the general thinking behind such a trip is –

  • We go manual for transportation and basically burn off some calories that we have so lovingly accumulated despite being cholesterol conscious.
  • We go slow (rather than breeze thru in fast cars) and so get a better chance at appreciating nature and rural life.
  • We interact with the local people (rather than just buy stuff off them with money power) in the course of creatively managing our board and lodge.
  • We get a peek into village life and in the process learn skills that we have lost by virtue of being part of the ‘developed’ society. We can also share some skills that we have.
  • We develop an appreciation for local knowledge and skills and the ability to thrive in what nature has provided.
  • We develop some trust in the ability of nature to take care of us and in the goodness of human beings rather than having to constantly struggle for one’s existence as if it is one long battle against nature and other human beings.
  • We get some time to reflect on our own lives
  • We loosen a little the tight stranglehold that money has over our minds and learn that alternative ways to live might exist.

And let us not forget that most important is to enjoy nature, creating music, dance, theatre, games and have a fun filled adventure! This is a real chance to re-connect to the gift culture.

Check out the film from the first yatra to get an idea of the adventure…

We will cycle about 100 km from Udaipur to Jaisamand. The whole region is culturally very rich and still has some jungles left.

What you need to bring along (and remember that everything you bring along has to be carried by you on your bike)-

  1. Personal clothing.
  2. Some bedding (sleeping bag, blanket etc)
  3. Water bottle (if you have a non-plastic one)
  4. Bikes can be rented at nearest town

Student and College life: A Quick Wrap Up of 2010

Students are a direct projection of youth in the city. They can never be avoided. Therefore their every issue affects us directly. We all do remember our movement for establishing an IIT in Udaipur. Past year has also been in headlines due to many reasons. Few of them are mentioned below.

1. MLSU gets its new VC

The most remarkable happening in 2010 for Udaipur was that the city’s own university Mohan Lal Sukhadia University (MLSU) got its Vice Chancellor after a long needy wait. This Year Mr. I.V. Trivedi sworn in as the new VC of the university.

college election udaipur

2. Young leaders on their way

One more remarkable happening for the year was that the student union elections were held after 6 years in Udaipur.

Mr. Dilip Joshi was elected as the president of the student union.

3. Advancement of MG College towards sports

MG sports academy established in the same year in MG College (Meera Girls College). No earlier such organisation was present in the college.

4. University to “ROOM” more brilliance

The Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Mr. Ashok Gehlot and Mr. C.P. Joshi initiated the foundation and hence the construction of a Youth Hostel in MLSU on 20th June 2010.

5. New career options, in Lakecity itself

MLSU introduced new courses in its curriculum such as M.P.Ed. , yoga, and B.P.Ed. ,for opening new vistas of career options.

6. President’s Udaipur visit

The hon’ble president of India, Mrs Pratibha Patil arrived Udaipur on 22nd December for the inauguration of the National KVK Conference at MLSU, alongwith other dignitaries, Rajasthan’s Chief Minister, Mr. Ashok Gehlot, Governor Mr. Shiv Raj Patil, Dr. C.P. Joshi, Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Sharad Pawar.

7. Rajasthan Technical University amuses people with its results

Rajasthan Technical University, already well known for all sorts of delays in exam conduction and result declaration, came into notice for the controversial B.Tech 3rd semester result. The exams were conducted in Feb 2010 whose results were declared thrice and withdrawn in a short span of time. Even after such a long period for checking and results, it was full of mistakes, such as a person from Udaipur scoring 477 in a subject out of 80 only, thus the scorecard claimed to get the person 113% marks. Few sources inform that another person from Udaipur was passed in a subject, in which he didn’t even appear to write the exam.

Top – 5 Unforgettables in Udaipur of 2010

2010 has come to an end. Now “Next Year” is only “Next Day” away.
But this year has given us tremendous memories, many good and few unfortunately bad. So to get u into a quick flashback of the whole year, without stressing your brain a lot, here I start my illustration for the year.

mcdonads

I ‘m Lovin’ It

Now this statement will be heard in almost every home in Udaipur.
Yes my dear Udaipies. Finally McDonalds has opened its first outlet in Lakecity at the Celebration Mall in Bhuvana.

iim udaipur

Lakecity to create Management Machos

Finally after so much issue on the matter of IIT in udaipur, finally Udaipur is blessed with an IIM, proposed to be at baleecha. The proposed IIM for the time being will however be run in the newly constructed polymer science building in MLSU.

earthquake udaipur

Earthquake trembles Lakecity

10th November 4:16 a.m. would be one of the bad times of our city, when we were shook by an earthquake. However thankfully, there was no damage to life or property.

masterchef udaipur

Rolling, Camera, and Action…!!!

Udaipur’s spectacular beauty is simply irresistible. To capture this picturesque beauty of the world’s no. 1 city, many movie and TV artists entered our Lakecity. The year saw rise in global visitors for the same reason. To mention a few, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (starring Dev Patel, Slumdog Millionaire fame), Mission Impossible 4 (starring Tom Cruise)( as reported by unverified sources) ,Rani (a French TV serial), Master Chef India (Indian TV serial hosted by Akshay Kumar on Star Plus), Impatient Vivek, and a Documentary from Seria was also shot in our own Lakecity.

fatehsagar overflows

The day the Lakecity stood still

Monsoons 2010 brought in many expectations to Udaipies about the dried up lakes. Every prayer was answered by the almighty. The dried lakes soon turned into brimful lakes. Finally the day was 9th September when the lakes overflowed after 4 years. However, a sad part associated with the happy news was that a tourist drowned in a boat accident in the lake Fatehsagar.

Text Messaging – Top Trends 2010

SMS Trends

Now while reading the title of this write-up, you might be thinking what must have entered in my mind that i have chosen this topic, which may be catchy for some, irrelevant for some, and so on.
Everyone sends text messages, for communicating, keeping in touch with old pals, for informing people about locations, updating about some news, to exchange greetings, or even for fun, and many more reasons.
To add up a few facts, the CTIA survey 2009 states that

  • More than 1.5 Trillion Text messages were sent in 2009,
  • Almost 5 billion Text messages sent per day.

This is a very mind blowing figure in itself.
The year 2010 also saw a great fall in the prices of text messages in the competitive telecom market; as a result there was a great boom in the sms incoming and outgoing rates in mobile phones. Sms hence became cheapest communication method, far cheaper than voice calls.
Udaipies use messaging services to the extreme, specially the youngsters. I, being a regular sms (short message service) user often come across many of the messages from various origins, popularly termed together as “Forwarded messages”, mostly pre-generated from internet or creative sources and are just forwarded to people for information or fun purposes.
Many of the messages were popular throughout the year or for a part of it. To give a quick wrap up of the 2010 top messaging trends, I hereby list few of the topics that will keep 2010 a much remembered year.

  • Sardar jokes were replaced in majority by Santa and Banta. Good to have two imaginative characters, instead of cracking jokes on an active part of our country and society.
  • Despite of the blackouts (telecom companies charging extra money per sms) on special occasions such as holi, diwali, new year, etc, the Udaipies have found a smarter way to deal with the situations. Now be it diwali, holi, valentine’s day, rakhi, or any such expected event, wishes and greetings are sent in advance, ranging from a day before to almost a week before.
  • The year saw a little less inclination of people towards the so called Religious Spam which claimed good luck if passed to many people and worst ever luck if the message was deleted. A FeelGood moment to see Udaipur realising what the truth is.
  • When Udaipur witnessed rains, daily updates on the levels of the famous lakes Pichola and Fateh Sagar were top blockbusters of the season. Inch-by-inch update was conveyed throughout the city, the chain ended when the lakes finally overflowed.
  • Next chapter was jokes and shayaris. An existing sub-part of a combination of both, PJ (which meant silly jokes, generally in poetry form) were much circulated.
  • Specially the year saw spread of series messages, generally the abovementioned PJs’, most remarkable of which was on the daily television soap CID.
  • Near the release of the south Indian blockbuster flick ROBOT, the focus of Udaipur shifted from all the jokes and poems to messages based on Rajnikant.
  • Last but not the least, messages based on two songs that were most popular throughout the year- Munni and Sheila were also seen entering the inboxes very often.
  • The current topic of the messages has shifted apart from all, to new year resolution and greetings.

Team UdaipurBlog too wishes its readers a very happy and prosperous New Year.  🙂

Shilpgram – Site for Crafts and Arts fair in Udaipur

shilpgram

Shilpgram is a hindi word which translates itself to Village Of Art And Craft. Shilpgram is situated 3kms west to the famous Fateh Sagar Lake in Udaipur.

It’s a State sponsored living musium stretched on a 70 acre land on the foothills of Aravali. Shilpgram or the Rural Arts and Crafts Village in Udaipur is one of the seven centers of the West Zone Cultural Center (WZCC), established by the government in 1986.

Every year in the end of the year, a 10-day festival is organised which shows glimpses of the complete rural India within the 70 acre itself. There are 26 representative huts of member states in this craft village, incorporating traditional architectural features of different ethnic groups residing within the Zone.

Artisans and craftsmen from all over the nation join this festival to display their best outcome of their art and culture for which their zone is best renowned. Be it the warm woolens from Jammu and Kashmir, or even the Bamboo artwork from far east states, the famous Banarasi silk sarees, along with our very own Rajasthani craftwork, from hand-crafted key chains and bangles, to glasswork, pottery and even furnitures, everything can be seen waiting for you at the festival. All the items are not for display alone; you may purchase the things available with your free will, and take them home with you.

At the entrance you find the traditional dancers welcoming you. Mud huts with thatched roofs make out the splendid village scene, with you yourself witnessing it live. Hungry after walking so long? There are plenty of mouth watering food and “DESI” fast-food items from different traditions, in your way.

Moreover, in these 10-days every evening you can also witness the rich culture of India, via the juvenile traditional and cultural folk programmes, each day with a different theme and different heart throbbing programmes on the open-theatre stage at shilpgram.

Not only Udaipies(Udaipur Guys), but people from all across the globe eagerly wait for this once-a-year fest, and to be a part of it. So what are you waiting for dear udaipies? Just make up your mind and be proud to be a part of this unique fest of its kind, going back to your rich cultural roots.

Dignity and justice for all of us

The Human Rights Day is observed on the 10th December every year. On this day in 1948, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The Declaration is recognition of the fact that the inherent dignity and the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family are the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world and reaffirmation of faith of the peoples of United Nations in the fundamental human rights.

What are human rights?

Human rights are rights inherent to all human beings, whatever our nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, language, or any other status. We are all equally entitled to our human rights without discrimination. These rights are all interrelated, interdependent and indivisible.

Universal human rights are often expressed and guaranteed by law, in the forms of treaties, customary international law, general principles and other sources of international law. International human rights law lays down obligations of Governments to act in certain ways or to refrain from certain acts, in order to promote and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms of individuals or groups.

All human rights are indivisible, whether they are civil and political rights, such as the right to life, equality before the law and freedom of expression; economic, social and cultural rights, such as the rights to work, social security and education, or collective rights, such as the rights to development and self-determination, are indivisible, interrelated and interdependent. The improvement of one right facilitates advancement of the others. Likewise, the deprivation of one right adversely affects the others.

INGREDIENTS OF HUMAN RIGHTS

  • All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.
  • Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, color, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. Furthermore, no distinction shall be made on the basis of the political, jurisdictional or international status of the country or territory to which a person belongs, whether it is independent, trust, non-self-governing or under any other limitation of sovereignty.
  • Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.
  • No one shall be held in slavery or servitude; slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms.
  • All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law. All are entitled to equal protection against any discrimination in violation of this Declaration and against any incitement to such discrimination.
  • Everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each state.
  • Everyone has the right to a nationality.
  • No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his nationality nor denied the right to change his nationality.
  • Everyone has the right to own property alone as well as in association with others.
  • No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his property.
  • Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.
  • Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.
  • Everyone has the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association.
  • No one may be compelled to belong to an association.
  • Everyone has the right to work, to free choice of employment, to just and favorable conditions of work and to protection against unemployment.
  • Everyone, without any discrimination, has the right to equal pay for equal work.
  • Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. Elementary education shall be compulsory. Technical and professional education shall be made generally available and higher education shall be equally accessible to all on the basis of merit.

Indian Govt. is no less concerned about human rights. Human Rights Act 1993 created “The National Human Rights Commission” with the following provisions:

(a) The commission is authorized to conduct enquiry on a petition presented to it by a victim or into complaint of violation of human rights or abetment thereof or negligence by some public servant in prevention of such violation.

(b) The National Human Rights Commission can also intervene in any proceeding involving any allegation of violation of Human Rights pending before some court with the permission of the court.

(c) The commission can visit any prison in the country to study the living conditions of its inmates and make recommendations thereabout.

(d) The commission can review the existing safeguards and laws protecting Human Rights and can make suggestions for effective implementation thereof.

(e) The National Human Rights Commissions encourages NGO’s and institutions and promotes research in the field of Human Rights.

Surely, there are some remedies available against violation of human rights. You can make complaint of violation of human rights to State Human Rights Commission, National Human Rights Commission etc.  However, the aggrieved parties whose human rights have been violated must be alert about their human rights.  Therefore, many times justice is denied to poor, weak persons and human rights remain only in statutory books. The downtrodden group of society is compelled to suffer endless trouble.

Guidelines on how to file complaint with the NHRC :
