Child Trafficking – Modern Day Slavery

Child Trafficking

Children Fuel BT Cotton Boom: Only Just 1 Rs. per Hour

BUMPER CROP Sought for their nimble hands and low height, Rajasthani children help pollinate fields of genetically modified cotton in Gujarat.

With social-security schemes faltering, even a state vigil can’t stop the night run of traffickers

Nearly 40,000 acres of land is under contract farming of BT cottonseeds in these areas where laborers and children are grossly underpaid and kept in sub-human conditions during the peak season of July, August and September.
Child labor is rampant in border districts of south Rajasthan and north Gujarat where they are engaged under contract farming of BT cotton seeds but governments of the two states are doing little to curb it, representatives of labor outfits like Dakshin Rajasthan Mazdoor Union, Adivasi Centre for Labor Research and Action (CLRA) and Adivasi Sarvangin Vikas Sangh have alleged.

Demanding immediate raids in the fields to free these children and action against seed companies that employ them, they said nearly two lakh children are working in these fields. This has led to an increase in dropout rates in schools in the area, said Sudhir Katiyar of CLRA during a media briefing recently.

According to Katiyar, migrant laborers work with their children in 19 villages of Diyodar taluka, 18 villages of Kankrej taluka and 15 villages of Deesa taluka in Banaskantha district. He said in parts of south Rajasthan, especially in Udaipur, Dungarpur and Banswara districts, minor girls are subjected to sexual harassment in the fields and even police complaints have been filed.

Nearly 40,000 acres of land is under contract farming of Bt cottonseeds in these areas where laborers and children are grossly underpaid and kept in sub-human conditions during the peak season of July, August and September. Once the season is over, they return empty-handed to their villages, said Mannalal Masters of Social Service Trust, Udaipur. Masar said children working on the field often suffered serious illness due to exposure to toxic chemic also that lead to death in many cases.

Trafficiking

In Udaipur & Dungarpur: In this land of rolling hills, made lush by the monsoon traffic ceases after dusk. So, I it is unusual to hear jeeps running through the night on the winding roads of tribal south Rajasthan.

Though the day, are out in force, trying to stop what they can only slow the mass trafficking of children across the border into Gujarat from the Rajasthan districts that border it: Udaipur, dungarpur, banswara and sirohi .

Dungarpur Collector purna Chandra kishan acknowledged that some 30,000 children, some as young as seven, were sent across the border last year.

Udaipur Collector Anand kumar said the count for Udaipur was 25000.  So, the jeeps continue their short runs at night, 8to 20 km into Gujarat. If the pressure is too intense, the contractors, called “mates” locally, walk the children across the border. Then jeeps came there to pick up those children.

Recently in July near about 450 children has been rescued on the borders, were going to Gujarat for the same cause usually children from Jhadol, kherwara and nearer area has been trapped in all this. But now issue is that after rescue of those children where are they at present? Are they safe? Or they have gone again for the same work? What initiative had been taken by system?

Some social organization situated in Udaipur and nearer areas started work over child trafficking and child migration as well .There are 43 organizations are working for it in they are doing work over it from last 3-4 months .They have Named it as Bal Suraksha Network (BSN).They do visit those villages from which children are being sent.BSN network did made posters, pamphlets and banners and trying to make people aware  that they shouldn’t sent there children to these industries and  to contractors which spoils their kids in each n every aspect of life.

Once the cotton field of Gujarat’s prosperous Sabarkantha or Banaskantha districts, interviews with child workers reveal, the children are packed into sheds, where they sleep on a mat, must rise at 4am, endure 12-to-14 hour  days and little relief from illness.

Last year according to official figures, five children dead. The unofficial toll is in then tens.

Laloo ramji, who “guesses” he is 13 or 14. Is a child worker who will not be going back this year? Perhaps, he never will His hands are getting to big.

A wiry boy with an ear-stud and willing smile, ramji recalled staying with “40 to 50 other children in a small cramped room”.

Their work was in the sprawling fields planted with Bt (bacillus thuringiensis ) cotton , name after a soil bacterium whose gene has been inserted in to the cotton plant to produce a toxin that resists the bollworm, reduces insecticide use – and so transforms the cotton economy.

Ramji explained how he plucked the stamen, or the male part of the cotton flower. “We place in it the sunlight, so it opened,” said ramji. “After it (the flower) opened, we took the pollen and rubbed it on the female part (pistil) of the flower we worked till about 1 pm when we were given a two – hour break for lunch. Then we works till 7 pm.”

Gujarat produces about half of India’s cotton, adroitly using its Bt version this cotton to boost yield and lower costs. The state’s fields had a record harvest in 2009, and the anticipation of another boom fuels the trafficking of children.

The BT cotton plant is smaller than normal cotton, and that drives the demand for child workers. It helps that they have small, nimble fingers for the delicate work of pollination.

Since agricultural labor is not a hazardous occupation, the labor laws say children under 14 can work, but only for six hour a day with an hour’s rest in between. In addition, there must be weekly holidays and medical benefits.

Work hours in the cotton fields’ stretch up to 14 hours, and children exposed to insecticides report a variety of health hazards. These include dizziness, headaches, nausea, weakness, Skin infection, and respiratory problems, as a 2000 study by the Gujarat Agriculture labor Union revealed.

“Critical to reducing child labor is effective implementation and access to the already available social protection schemes.” Said Samuel Mawunganidze chief of UNICEF in Rajasthan. “This will unsure that the parents have access to income and essential services, which will reduce pressure to send children to the BT cotton fields.”

When that will happen is uncertain.!!!!!!

Ganesh Chaturthi – The Birth of Lord Ganesh

Lord Ganesh

A Symbol Of Wisdom and A Bringer of Good Luck who remains with us everyday in all parts of our existence, whether it’s an occasion, merriment, Good or Bad. He is our True Almighty Guardian. Everyone of us  loves one of the most admired LORD GANESH also known as Avneesh (Lord of the whole world ), Gajanana (Elephant-Faced lord ), Ganpati (Lord of all Gods), Lambodar (The huge bellied lord), Shubhan(All auspicious lord ) ,  Siddhidata (Bestowed of success and accomplishments ), Vignaharta (Demolisher of obstacles), Vinayaka (Lord of all) and many more with a total of 108 names. Devotees of Ganesh are known as ‘Ganapatyas’, and the festival to celebrate and glorify him is called Ganesh Chaturthi.

Story behind the birth of Lord Ganesh:

Goddess PARVATI wanted Lord SHIVA to father a child. But Lord SHIVA refused it. An exasperated PARVATI created a child of her own. The child was called GANESH. PARVATI asked her son to guard the entrance to her bath and not let anyone in. GANESH obeyed, blocking even SHIVA’s entry, not knowing he was his mother’s consort. An otherwise detached SHIVA lost his cool, raised his trident and beheaded and stubborn lad. PARVATI was inconsolable in her grief and threatened to transform from gouri, the life-giving goddess, to kali, the life making goddess, if her son was not resurrected. SHIVA therefore ordered his followers, the ganas, to fetch him the head of the first living being they encountered. They brought back the head of an elephant, which SHIVA placed on the severed neck of PARVATI’s son and restored him to life. By giving him life, SHIVA became the boy’s Father. He Acknowledge his fatherhood by naming the lad Ganpati, Lord of Ganas.

Vinayaka stirs emotions of jealousy in SHIVA, and provokes him into violence. The action leads to reaction a series of events which culminates in the beheading of the child. PARVATI’s fury at the death of her child forces SHIVA to act. When he resurrects her creation and appoints him leader of his followers, he consciously becomes father and thus part of the material world. The resurrected Ganpati with a body created by the goddess and ahead given by God represents the transformation of SHIVA the hermit into SHIVA the householder.

So GANESH is the scholar son of SHIVA. Ganesh is born from PARVATI’s body. Ganesh is associated with feminine symbols like water, elephant, serpents and banana plant. Ganpati is rasa. Through this son of Shakti as PARVATI is known for, the grace of god (SHIVA) and goddess (PARVATI) reaches humanity. GANESH is full of wealth and wisdom. GANESH is scribe of Rishis.

SO,

The choice of an elephant’s head for GANESHA is interesting. In Hindu Symbolism, The elephant is the symbol of material abundance. Indra, King of the gods, rides an elephant. Elephants flank LAKSHMI (The goddess of Wealth and Prosperity). SHIVA, who rejects material pleasures, is described as Gajantaka- he who flays the elephant and uses its thick skin as his upper garment. By using the elephant’s head to resurrect the child of his consort, SHIVA in effect demonstrates his participation in the world of rasa. He uses the power of tapa to bring to life the child he killed.

GANPATI’s head represents tapa; his body represents Rasa. He reconciles God and Goddess. He becomes the doorway through which SHIVA enters World.

GANESHA has an elephant’s head, a corpulent body and a serpent tied round his stomach. Elephant pot belly and serpent are material symbols. That the upper part of his body is created by SHIVA and the lower part by Shakti makes him a luminal deity who brings together God and Goddess, Soul and substance, spiritual bliss and material delights. GANESHA is the lord of thresholds, sitting between yoga and bhoga, discipline and indulgence, monastic orders and fertility rites, Vedic speculation and Tantrik rituals. In some scriptures, Riddhi and Siddhi, Wealth and Wisdom, are his wives. Subha and Labha auspiciousness and profit are his sons. Santoshi, Satisfaction is his daughter. His rat represents the unmanageable, stubborn problems of like that he keeps at bay. GANESHA is thus the god of the present, sitting between the past and the future, removing all obstacles, ensuring the realization of every dream.

ALSO,

GANESH is the First lord according to Tantra. Tantra seeks the truth through the goddess. GANESH is lord of First Chakra. Since the participation of SHIVA is necessary to create GANESH, the first flower of Tantra blooms only after the first contact with SHIVA, the realization that life is not just the outer ever-changing world perceived by that senses; there is more, within, unchanging and still, beyond the reach of the senses.

GANESH CHATURTHI:

The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with impressive processions, lots of sweets and huge idols of Lord Ganesh in our Udaipur City. The Preparations for Ganesh Utsav starts many days before the Ganesh Chaturthi clay idols of Ganesh in varying sizes are made and sold. These idols are purchased and brought up home by the city people on the day before Ganesh Chaturthi, which is also the day of Hartalik (when women keep fast and invoke the blessings of goddess Parvati, who is Ganesh’s mother). There are numerous other GANESH festivals that are celebrated in the Temple premises but one of them which is most prominent is the Ganesh Chaturthi celebration. It is celebrated during the month of Magh known as Maghi Ganesh Utsav (the birth month of Ganesh). Ganesh Chaturthi falls on the fourth day of the Hindu month of Bhadrapada (around August-September) so for this year 2010 it is on 11 September. The festival as always will be celebrated in the major temple Bohra Ganesh Ji including various Ganesh temples of the Udaipur City. All the Arrangements and Preparations are over and hence Festival will be celebrated today in the city premises as always there will be a Fair at Bohra Ganesh Ji temple together with many sorts of custom and entertaining proceedings. Ganesh Chaturthi is glowingly celebrated in all the parts of city with full liveliness and sacredness.

ANANT CHATURTHI:

ANANT CHATURTHI (a.k.a Anant Chaturdashi) is the last day of the “Ganesh festival”. On the day of Anant Chaturdashi, the idols of Lord GANESH installed at home and various “Mandaps” (a.k.a display places) are taken to the nearby Lakes of the City like Pichola or to the ghats like Gangaur Ghat in great procession with slogans like: “Agle Baras tu Jaldi aa”(Come Soon Next Year) etc. On this day, people travel to the water front with the idols, big or small, dancing and singing in large procession. The 10 day long festival comes to an end after the immersion ceremony is over.

One should always recite the most prominent mantras dedicated to GANESH (as follows):

“Vakratunda Mahaakaaya Suryakotee Sama Prabha,
Nirvighnam kuru mey Deva, Sarva kaaryeshu Sarvadaa”

Which contains the names of Lord GANESHA with its Meanings:

Ø       Vakratunda                  curved trunk

Ø       Mahakaaya                   large bodied

Ø       Surya kotee                   million suns

Ø       Sama Prabha                with the brilliance of

Ø       Nirvighnam                  free of obstacles

Ø       Kuru                             Make

Ø       Mey                              My

Ø       Deva                             Lord

Ø       Sarva Kaaryeshu            in all work

Ø       Sarvada                         always.

May Lord GANESH of Large body, curved trunk, with the brilliance of a million suns, make all our work free of obstacles always..

Have a great weekend through enchanting celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi with loads of Sweets and Blessings of Lord Ganesh.

Ganpati Bappa Morya !!!

I tried my level best to share the acknowledged information in an appropriate manner but still in case someone finds any imprecision please do share.

Once Again FLU(s) Knock Our Udaipur

swine flu udaipur

Seems like the CLOUDS OF BAD DAYS are back for OUR BEAUTIFUL CITY. Feels a little strange no?? So what u think that can be?? Exactly, as the HEADING INDICATES it’s the RETURN OF FLU(s) (aka influenza). It’s a year back story, bloody swine better known as SWINE FLU (H1N1Virus) ruined thousands of lives all over the COUNTRY including our city UDAIPUR. And the BAD NEWS is IT’S BACK!! ya, u heard that RIGHT it is back, but this time the much dreadful news is with SWINE FLU there are TWO more FLU’S in the CITY and these are EYE FLU(aka conjunctivitis and pink eye) and BIRD FLU. Although BIRD FLU is not much spread in the city premises but can be seen in areas nearby UDAIPUR, so resting on tenterhooks (looking positively) we will discuss the details shortly (when required) with an UPDATE. This time our old adversary SWINE FLU is accompanied by two other deteriorating infectious diseases EYE FLU and BIRD FLU.

Everyone might have heard about the RAPID INCREASE in CASES of these EVIL diseases. This time again SWINE FLU is on its imperiling heights. One can easily see many SEVERE cases of SWINE FLU round the city.

According to a well known newspaper on September 3, 2010

(Dainik Bhaskar):
164 patients in the district so far are tested. Of these 4 patients died, 57 are confirmed and the screening is still going on. APPROXIMATELY 30 teams have been declared by the government for screening purposes all over Udaipur. These teams are screening in different 56 wards (city division in blocks).

As the name indicates FLU (aka influenza) are highly infectious diseases that cause fever, chills, cough, body aches, headaches, and sometimes ear aches and even sinus problems etc. The flu is caused by the influenza VIRUS (small infectious agent). As my personal experience most of the people suffering from these infectious diseases comes under the age group of 13-35 i.e. the YOUTH. My request to the YOUTH through this article is, please go through it and learn the basic contents of these diseases. Ponder the context and instructions for the betterment of yourself and the people nearby you. So Let me explain you briefly about the CAUSE(s), SYMPTOMS, PRECAUTIONS and TREATMENT (RECOMMENDED by a DOCTOR) of these infectious diseases briefly.

Let me firstly start with the most vulnerable and known disease nowadays:

Swine FLu Udaipur

SWINE FLU:

ORIGIN (source/cause): Particularly it is a disease of pigs. It is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by one of many Influenza A viruses. Most commonly, swine flu is of the H1N1 influenza subtype. However, they can sometimes come from the other types, such as H1N2, H3N1, and H3N2. The current outbreak of swine flu that has infected humans is of the H1N1 type. Basically Transmission of the virus from pigs to humans causes the disease. Transmission either takes place from contact with infected pigs (most common way) and from contact with infected humans (much less common way).

SYMPTOMS:

They are similar to those of regular flu, and include:

  • Body aches
  • Chills
  • Cough
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • fever (Temperature)
  • Tiredness (fatigue)
  • Diarrhea (less common)
  • Vomiting (less common) etc.

PRECAUTIONS:

  • Wash your hands regularly with soap,
  • Try to stay healthy,
  • Get plenty of sleep,
  • Do plenty of exercise,
  • Try to manage your stress ,
  • Drink plenty of liquids ,
  • Eat a well balanced diet,
  • Refrain from touching surfaces which may have the virus ,
  • Do not get close to people who are sick Stay away from crowded areas if there is a swine flu outbreak in your area etc.

TREATMENT:

FOR TREATMENT PLEASE CONSULT A DOCTOR !!!

Let me provide you a little FACTUAL INFORMATION about treatment of SWINEFLU ::
[There are drugs and vaccines around, that can effectively treat swine flu infection in humans (and many types of flu infections in humans). There are two main types: adamantanes (amantadine and remantadine) and inhibitors of influenza neuraminidase (oseltamivir and zanamivir). Beside drugs, supportive care at home or in hospital, focuses on controlling fevers, relieving pain and maintaining fluid balance, as well as identifying and treating any secondary infections or other medical problems can also be helpful.]

DON”T WORRY:: the majority of people infected with the virus make a full recovery if reported at the right time so BE AWARE and TAKE CARE !!

REMEMBER:: Please don’t act CARELESS and HESITATED in CONSULTING DOCTORS as your ONE SMART STEP CAN SAVE MANY LIVES !!!

These days next to SWINE FLU the second most infectious ailment in the city is EYEFLU. One can easily see people suffering from EYEFLU (aka conjunctivitis and pink eye) in the city without much care for them and the other people. Even some of them are unaware to the INCONCIEVABLE

So now let’s discuss about the second most infectious ailment in the city i.e.

Eye Flu Udaipur

EYEFLU:

ORIGIN (source/cause): The infection occurring in the conjunctiva (that lines the eyelid is called conjunctivitis) mostly occurs due to an allergic reaction or an infection. The inflammation that results from it causes swelling of the small blood vessels, which, in turn, gives a pink or red cast to the white portion of the eyes. It’s a highly contagious disease. It can spread from one person to other through direct contact.

Some of the MAIN CAUSES OF EYE FLU are:

  • Direct contact with an infected person,
  • Overcrowding,
  • Unhygienic surroundings,
  • Eyestrain,
  • Bacteria,
  • Virus,
  • Irritating substance or material in the eyes,
  • Allergies,
  • Environmental factors, such as smoke, dust, or pollen and

SYMPTOMS:

  • Eyes turn reddish,
  • Itching in the eyes ,
  • Watery secretion from the eyes ,
  • Pus formation in the eyes ,
  • Redness in the white of the eye or inner eyelid ,
  • Increased amount of tears ,
  • Thick yellow discharge from the eyes, which crusts over the eyelashes, especially after sleep,
  • Green or white discharge from the eye ,
  • Burning eyes,
  • Blurred vision ,
  • Increased sensitivity to light and Inflamed eyes etc.

PRECAUTIONS:

  • Do not share towels, handkerchiefs, linen, pillows, sunglasses (etc),
  • Avoid shaking hands on physical contact with an infected person,
  • Patients should wear dark glasses,
  • Wash eyes and hands frequently,
  • Medicines are ineffective if it is due to a viral infection and
  • Consult your doctor and use medicines under his supervision etc.

TREATMENT:

FOR TREATMENT PLEASE CONSULT AN EYE CARE DOCTOR !!!

Let me provide you a little FACTUAL INFORMATION about treatment of EYEFLU::

[Its medication can be a mix of prescribed and over the counter medicines. For bacterial infections doctors generally prescribe antibiotics to attack the bacteria. The medication can be delivered in varieties like eye drops or ointments that are applied to the eyes for a few days. Pink eye (eye flu) caused by allergies can be solved with allergy eye drops like Patanol. Patanol is one solution that has been proven to be effective in preventing pink eye caused by allergies with just 2 drops a day. It is safe according to the manufacturer for kids over the age of three. Other medication with antihistamines Recommended by a professional, can include anything from liquid to pill state. (Also, for relieving discharge, warm compresses are great for removing the sticky residue as well as the crusty, dried portions around the eyes).]

As mentioned above, at present we are not discussing BIRD FLU as there are no heard cases about the disease in the CITY. An UPDATE about the details of BIRD FLU will be soon posted if required.

This was all about FLU(s)…

In MY OPINION, A little AWARENESS and CARE can be helpful and safeguard you from these life threatening diseases. So live AWARE and ALERT!!!

MAY GOD BLESS US ALL !!!!

Note: Any medical information published on this website is not intended as a substitute for informed medical advice and you should not take any action before consulting with a health care professional.

Update (September 19, 2010):

The number of flu cases in Udaipur continues to rise at an alarming pace, so far with increasing number of deaths (due to Swine flu) from different parts of city 2 more died on September 17, including a 8 month pregnant women. All deaths have been reported in less than a month – from September 2 to 19. More or less  Eye Flu has also been spread to whole Udaipur.

According to a well known newspaper (Dainik Bhaskar) On September 19, 2010 a Total of 123 patients had been confirmed swine Flu positive in city MB Hospital while astonishingly12,000 Eye Flu drops are being sold daily in the city.

With rapid increase of these diseases in the city, we got some shocking news from our source(s) regarding the unavailability of certain recommended conveniences for the patients in the Swine Flu ward of MB Hospital like Fumigation and to provide defending mask(s) for the relatives of the patients. Fumigation is a process in which disinfectant is spread in the form of smoke and vapors to disinfect the surroundings from microorganisms so that the well beings approaching the surroundings does not get affected from the disease(s). Fumigation has been weekly recommended in the Swine Flu labs and wards but is being completely neglected in MB Hospital.

Defending mask(s) are also crucially important for safety of well beings, still the hospital administration is not intriguing all these steps seriously which will consequently lead to severe increase in spread of  such diseases.

We again request everyone to adopt precautionary measures like washing hands frequently and avoiding contact with persons having flu like symptoms. For more info read Precautions suggested above in the article for prevention from these diseases.

Be Aware & Take Care!!!
