Maharana Pratap Jayanti

maharana pratap UdaipurBlog

We Belong from the Land Of Warriors – ‘Udaipur’ – The Capital of Mewar and today we celebrate the Glory of Freedom, Independence in the form of Maharana Pratap Jayanti. Pratap (The Son of Maharana Udai Singh II) the Legendary Hero of Mewar who fought for Freedom till his Last Breath. Due to his Effort Mewar was the Only Independent Land free from Invaders all around the World. It is a well known fact that Mewar was the Only free state from the Great Mughal Badhshah Akhbar and Britishers.

This 1 Rupee Coin Made Up Of Silver is a Symbol of Friendship between Bristishers and Mewar State

Maharana Pratap Jayanti is Celebrated every year on Shukla Thritiya of the Ashad month (May or June). This Year (2010)  it is on 15th June.

About Maharana Pratap:

Maharana Pratap (May 9, 1540 – January 29, 1597) was 16th century King who ruled Mewar, a state in north-western India. He was born on 9th May 1540 in Kumbhalgarh, Rajasthan. His father was Maharana Udai Singh II and mother was Rani Jeevant Kanwa. He was the eldest among 25 brothers and 20 sisters and was the 54th ruler of Mewar. He belonged to the Sisodiya Rajput clan.

From childhood Rana Pratap had the passion that a Kshatriya king needs to possess. In 1568, when Maharana was just 27 years old, the Mughal emperor Akbar conquered Chittor. Maharana Udai Singh, his father decided to leave Chittor and moved to Gogunda. Seeing this as opportunity, his half brother Jagmal took away the throne. When Jagmal was unable to manage affairs he joined the army of Akbar with an idea to take revenge with Maharana Pratap.

Maharana faced many struggles in his career. He kept on fighting with Akbar all his life. Akbar tried several ways to win over Maharana Pratap but he was always a failure. Maharana could not forget when Akbar killed 30,000 unarmed residents of Chittor only because they refused to convert to Islam. This made Maharana revolt against Akbar and he followed strict codes of Kshatriyas to fight with Akbar.

Battle of Haldighati

Battle Of HaldiGhati - UdaipurBlog

On June 21, 1576 (June 18 by other calculations), the two armies met at Haldighati, near the town of Gogunda in present-day Rajasthan. While accounts vary as to the exact strength of the two armies, all sources concur that the Mughal forces greatly outnumbered Pratap’s men (1:4). The battle of Haldighati, a historic event in the annals of Rajputana, lasted only four hours. In this short period, Pratap’s men essayed many brave exploits on the field. Folklore has it that Pratap personally attacked Man Singh: his horse Chetak placed its front feet on the trunk of Man Singh’s elephant and Pratap threw his lance; Man Singh ducked, and the mahout was killed.

However, the numerical superiority of the Mughal army and their artillery began to tell. Seeing that the battle was lost, Pratap’s generals prevailed upon him to flee the field ( so as to be able to fight another day. Myths indicate that to facilitate Pratap’s escape, one of his lieutenants, a member of the Jhala clan, donned Pratap’s distinctive garments and took his place in the battlefield. He was soon killed. Meanwhile, riding his trusty steed Chetak, Pratap made good his escape to the hills.

But Chetak was critically wounded on his left thigh by a Mardana (Elephant Trunk Sword) while Pratap had attempted to nail down Man Singh. Chetak was bleeding heavily and he collapsed after jumping over a small brook few kilometres away from the battle field. When Pratap’s general donned Pratap’s clothing and armour, it went unnoticed, thanks to the chaos of the war, but for two Turk knights from the Mughal army. They could not communicate it with others in their group, due to the linguistic barrier (the appropriate language would have been Persian, Marwari or Arabi, given the composition of the Mughal army). They immediately followed Pratap without wasting time. The moment they started chasing him, Pratap’s younger brother Shaktisingh, who was fighting from the Mughal side, (he had some disputes with Pratap at the time of Pratap’s coronation; hence he had defected and gone over to Akbar’s court) realized that his own brother was under threat. Pratap’s general’s sacrifice had already been discovered by him. He could not help but react against a threat to his own brother. He followed the Turks, engaged them in single combat and killed them. In the meanwhile, Chetak collapsed and Pratap saw his brother Shaktisingh killing the two Mughal riders. Saddened by the loss of his beloved general and horse, he embraced his brother and broke into tears. Shaktisingh also cried and asked for his brother’s pardon, for having fought as his enemy. Pratap pardoned him (later on he was given a huge estate near Chittor). Shaktisingh then offered him his own horse and requested him to get to a safe place. This incident is famous in Rajasthani folklore, a song “O Neele Ghode re Aswar” (O Rider of the Blue Horse) mentions it.

A mausoleum to Chetak is at the site of the steed’s death.

The impact of the battle on the Mughal army was also significant. In terms of numbers the Mughal army suffered heavier losses. This was also because of the intensive arrow showers by the Bhil tribes of the surrounding mountains who had sided with Pratap. To honour their contribution, a Bhil warrior was placed next to Pratap in the Royal Coat of Arms of Mewar.

The battle of Haldighat is considered to be the first Major breakthrough of Rajputs against the Mughals since the Second Battle of Khanwa in 1527, which was fought between Rana Sanga grandfather of Maharana Pratap, and the Mughal Babur grandfather of Akbar. It is regarded with a degree of significance by many Rajput families.

Moti Magri (Udaipur):

Moti Magri Smarak - UdaipurBlogAn impressive bronze statue of Maharana Pratap and his favorite and loyal horse, who fiercely protected his master and stood by him till his last breath, stands at the top of Moti Magri, overlooking Fateh Sagar. Local habitants climb the hill to pay homage to Maharana Pratap and his faithful horse Chetak, who were killed in the battle of Haldighati. Also there are the ruins of one of the first modest palaces of Udaipur and also a charming Japanese rock garden. The Memorial has the first Light & Sound program in Rajasthan, that displays the glorious 1400 years of Mewar’s history. All these are highly decorated with lights during the Maharana Pratap Festival. People from across the world come to visit the place.

Incident: Are We Eating Safe?

Dosa Cockroach Udaipur

(This Is An Edited(Fake) Picture Just to Sarcasm the state of the Incident in a Famous Restaurant. The topic states about an Incident that took place in our City not about the picture. )

Incident To Discuss About: Cockroach in Dosa

Recently a week ago A Cockroach was found in a Dosa  in one of  our City’s finest South Indian Café in Anand plaza(I Hope You can Guess The Name !). A Family ordered the Dosa and while eating found out that there was a cockroach inside the Dosa.

If this is the condition of a well known restaurant which is very famous for South Indian Food then what would be the condition of the other restaurants. But this raises a serious question that Are We Really Eating Safe?

Recently Food Inspection was also done to check the quality of food been served in restaurants, but nothing was been found. So we do not have much to conclude rather than saying that Our Health is in our Hands and We have to take Care of it.

Udaipur – Land of Minerals

Udaipur - Land of Minerals

Udaipur is a well known name famous for its Lakes, Palaces, Architecture, Temples, Natural beauty, Eco trails, Romantic evenings and its Golden History. But it’s a place lot more famous around the world not just for it’s beauty but also as place endowed with natural minerals.
Udaipur being Major Tourist Hub of the Country is also a Commercial Hub of the world with handicrafts and marble mining and processing as important occupation of people. Nature has endowed Udaipur with natural minerals. Our city tops in mining of natural minerals listed below:

  1. White marble
  2. Zinc
  3. Rock phosphate
  4. Talc (soapstone)
  5. Calcite
  6. Quartz
  7. Wollastonite
  8. Pyrophyllite & Sillimanite

Marble Industry:

Mining Udaipur

Udaipur stands 1st in the world for mining and processing of white marble. It is the Asia’s largest market for white, green, pink and other marble. All these Marble mines udaipurmarble’s are exclusively mined, processed and exported around the World. Udaipur and Rajasthan comes first in marble mining and tops the list in this segment in the country. The marble industry is well set and established over hear with proper infrastructure and technological support for mining and processing. It is the largest sector giving employment to many people of the city and those immigrants from small villages. The business is very vast; the mines and processing units are extended in the adjoining areas namely Sukher, Rajsamand, Rajnagar, Kesrayaji, Chittor , Kishangarh etc. In total there are approximately 5,000 small and big units working in field of mining, processing, exporting and trading of marble.
The marble being produced is sold in all the states and across borders with R.K marble as largest producer of marble in the world with 60,000 square meter per day has earned the company a place in Guinness Book of World Records.
Though mining was once banned in the Aravalli region but the association of so many people with this industry as an employment agent cannot be denied and government had to cancel their order because of this.

Zinc:

zinc udaipurThe only company producing zinc is Hindustan Zinc. Formerly it was managed and run by Government of India and is now a part of big public company called Vedanta Group. Their Head offices are located amidst the city and the plants or projects run in outskirts of the city. It is one of the Largest producer of Zinc in the Country which accounts to 7,54,000 Tonnes P.A. It’s a Big organization and provides employment to hundreds of people. Their mines operate in Dariba near Udaipur where the Products Zinc Concentrate and Lead Concentrate which has a Ore product capacity 0.30 milion tonnes per annum.

Rock Phosphate:

Rock phosphate is another such mineral been mined and processed by RSMML. The major activity of RSMML is the mining of Rock phosphate ore. It operates one of the largest and fully mechanised mines in the country at Jhamarkotra, 26 Kms. from Udaipur.
In India the economy being predominantly based on agriculture, the fertilizer production plays a pivotal role. Only about 35% to 40% of the requirement of raw material for phosphatic fertilizer production are being met through indigenous sources and the rest is met through import in the form of rock phosphate, phosphoric acid & direct fertilizers. In such a situation Jhamarkotra plays an important role by contributing 98% of rock phosphate production of India.

White Industrial Minerals:

The minerals Talc , Dolomite, Calcite, China Clay are of same category, composition and use and mainly used as fillers, strengthening agents , whiteners for manufacturing in paints , plastics , paper , detergents , Talc Udaipurcosmetics etc. These minerals come under the category of white industrial minerals. These minerals are mined in neighboring villages and been processed into fine powder to be used for industrial purposes all around the world. The demand for these minerals is very high all around the world with high consumptions from Europe and Middle East nations. Udaipur is the lead producer of these minerals Wolkem India is a leading name in the mining and processing of Calcite and Wallastonite across the World and Golcha Group is the top name when someone thinks about Soapstone (Talc). Whereas Shri Kailash Khanij Udhyog is the only miner and producer of mineral Pyrophyllite and Sillimanite in this region. Both these minerals are widely used in refractories and other industrial applications around the World.

Mewar Industrial Area in Udaipur is full of Grinding Units these Minerals and New Industrial Areas are developed to accommodate the growth of these Industries. Around 500 units are involved into Mining, Grinding and Processing of these Minerals in and around Udaipur city.

Impact on Nature and Societal Perspective:

Mining and Mineral Industries are also a cause to natural hazard, degrading land resources and natural surroundings. Although mining in Aravalli range has been banned but illegal mining is still going on in these regions and causing problems to natural surroundings. But these industries are so prominent as they give employment to a lot of people, the benefits arising out of them cannot be ignored too. So many people from all economic strata are associated with these industries and if the industry is banned and shut down then surely too much of unemployment, which the state cannot afford. As long as it keeps on giving employment to people the industry will survive and so do the people.

UdaipurBlog team is Thankful to Mr. Ashok Chohan of  Shri Kailash Khanij Udhyog for his Valuable insights About the Mineral Industry.

Animal Aid Unlimited

A Visit:

Its 10 a.m. in the morning, Sun is getting brighter, Birds are chirping, some dogs are barking. We are at the gate of Animal Aid Unlimited at Badi. A young fair lady welcomes us in with a smile. Her name is Claire Abrams she introduces herself as co-founder of this Organization. She lets us in , and we see a lady feeding milk from a bottle to a puppy who is crippled. A wounded dog is lying besides that who is been looked after by a man in his mid 20’s. This man is healing his wounds by applying ointment on them. There are other dogs, which are playing around. There is a lot of activity going around, sounds of barking Dogs, mooing Cows, braying Donkeys and a lot more.

Animal Aid Unlimited

Claire took us further inside to A kennel where all the ill dogs stay. We could see a team of 4 men holding a dog with a badly wounded neck, they gave him medicines and vaccines to heal and recover. On asking “What had happened to this dog” she told the dog seems to be a victim of cruelty by men. Sum one tied a knot around his neck as a result he lost his outer skin cover, cruel but true. She said that it will take time to heal but he will be fine in some period of time.

Dog kenneldogs kennel

We saw another puppy that was shivering with pain in his kennel. The probable reason for that could have been that sum body drove on him. She told that he showed no signs of healing and he is gong to die soon. We felt bad and helpless for the poor fellow; (Felt a grudge why people do that? Why can’t people drive slowly and carefully?) Every Animal brought in there had a heart-filling story of its own. The speechless animals spoke through their innocent eyes as if trying to say something. (Who can believe that there is no soul in those luminous eyes?) Words were not enough to describe the situation there one could only feel it.

CowsDonkeys

We further went to other sheds of cows, donkeys, pigs they too had the similar stories of cruelty, brutality and inhumanness of mankind that couldn’t be described. For a moment it made us feel shameful, being a human felt like rather animals are better off then humans because what they want is just love nothing else. Looking at all those animals our world came to a standstill. But two small joyful pigs Bronze and Silver brought a ray of hope and smile on our faces, as they play around us unknown of the entire cruel world besides them.

About Animal Aid:

Animal

Coming to India way back in 1993 by a US couple named (James and Erika Abrams) who came on a trip to the country and to Udaipur and fell in love with it. They founded Animal Aid Unlimited, an animal care center which provides help and shelter to stray and homeless animals (dogs, donkeys, cows, cats, pigs, birds) is now a Big Hospital cum Animal Care Center at Badi in front of T.B. hospital with around 250 animals receiving treatment and care per day on an average.

The Animal Aid Unlimited organization is one such special organization in the country run by a US family to look after those street animals that have no home and no one to care for them. Animal Aid is full of rescued street animals (cows, dogs, donkeys, cat , pigs) and there are some heart throbbing stories of cruelty, brutality and neglect by humans upon them in our very own Udaipur city.

A ring on their helpline number (24*7) and they come in to action

Animal Aid Unlimited though a name uncommon to some, is very common and famous amongst Animal Lovers of the city. Any Animal Lover who sees some animal in pain and in need of a helping hand just calls Animal Aid Unlimited helpline no. 0294-2810327 and request help. The specialized team of people immediately comes into action and rushes forward to help the suffering animal. They locate the animal as guided by the Animal Lovers and rescue the animal into their ambulance to their center. These animals are mostly ownerless who without the life-saving call would be left on the roads to die.

At the center in Badi the animals are kept under supervision and full care is ensured so that become becomes well soon. Mainly the cases comes of brutality by humans in any form (indescribable) , road accidents by fast moving vehicles, fights among animals itself or any calamity caused due to unknown factors. Because the animals are unowned, many times they do not know exactly the history of the animal.

There are separate sheds and kennels for every animal in the center spread across 4 bighas. The dogs are kept into separate kennels for the time of their treatment. Same as dogs other animals such as cows, donkeys have separate paddock for their treatment and stay. Animals after their treatment are been released back to where they were caught, but those who are permanently injured or disabled stay with them for their lifetime.

90% of animals coming in get completely well but some unfortunate and badly wounded animals die too, though unfortunate and sad but true. Animal Aid urges Udaipur people to call immediately when they see a suffering animal, not to wait, because if they don’t receive treatment immediately they may become to serious to recover.

A word with the Co founder of Animal Aid Unlimited – Ms. Claire Abrams

Claire

In the words of Claire:

“Animal Aid Unlimited was the dream of my parents. We are originally from Seattle USA and came to Udaipur almost 15 years ago for a visit and fell in love with the beautiful city. Udaipur is a very peaceful and safe place that we decided to shift to permanently. None in my family has a degree in veterinary medicine, but we are passionate about animals and committed to saving as many as we can.

The Animal Aid hospital and rescue center was established in 2002 in the small village of Chota Hawala near Rajiv Gandhi Udgyan. Our mission is to rescue and save the lives of suffering animals in Udaipur, mainly the stray animals who suffer from road accidents, injuries, and various illnesses.

My parents’ careers were as consultants with organizations in the U.S. and Australia, but since 2002 they have dedicated their lives to rescuing animals. We have been living in Udaipur for almost 15 years now, and call Udaipur “HOME”.

Asking upon regarding the support from government Claire says:

“The local government has not yet provided Animal Aid with funds to help stray animals, which is unfortunate, because with their help we could be reaching to even more animals.”

We asked Claire about the latest news?

“The latest important issue, which was covered in the Times of India, is regarding the Udaipur Municipal Corporation’s cruel and illegal practice of catching stray dogs and dumping them in the deserts to die without food and water. This brutality is raising concern amongst Udaipur’s animal lovers and through the campaign to stop the UMC from killing dogs, we are trying to raise the status of stray dogs.”

Attitude of citizens:

“We are really thankful to the caring people of Udaipur who call the Emergency Help-line whenever they see an injured animal. We get about 15-20 calls a day, which adds up to more than 3,000 calls per year. This is fantastic, and without that vital support we would not be able to rescue the animals.

We hope to continue getting support from Udaipurites, including the young people who will shape the future. We can all make a huge difference in the lives of these innocent animals that depend our help for their lives. I want to ask everyone, that pleases, if you see an animal that is suffering and in need, don’t turn and look the other way, but do something to help her. You are her only chance and you have the power to help her. If not now, when? If not you, who?

“Remember, just a call can give a new life to someone.”

Asking about raising funds for the cause:

Claire says Animal Aid depends on the generous donations of people who care about animals.

To run Animal Aid costs about Rs. 13,000 per day — more than Rs. 3 lakh per month.

The hospital depends on donations from businesses, foreign tourists and some random donations from animal lovers.

Claire says,

If more people contributed whatever they could—even small donations, even things like old cloth for bedding, blankets, rice, dal, toast or biscuits, green grass—every little bit more that people give means more animals being saved. The animals of Udaipur need all of us to join hands and help them. I am dreaming of a day when not a single animal in Udaipur is suffering. I think there are other people who are dreaming about the same thing. It takes a lot of energy, courage and money to make this dream come true, and we’re already part-way there. I want the next 10 years to bring 10 times more help to animals and the ONLY way we can do it is by helping them TOGETHER.”

A Request By Claire:

Animals have rights just like men, women and children do. And just as it is wrong to beat a person, force labor on children and abuse women, it is also wrong to do these things to animals.

Beat The Heat

It has Been long facing the problem of excess heat in summer this time in Udaipur(Moreover Rajasthan). Exposure to heat cannot be avoided. Everyone has to face this surfeit Heat.

Beat The Heat Logo Udaipurblog

UdaipurBlog Bring you some tips ‘To Beat the Heat‘.

  • Procure lots and lots of Liquids (WATER, Juices, Shakes, Sodas, Nimbu pani, coconut water etc) as in summer we loose lot of water from our body in form of sweat and in order to avoid Dehydration we should take ‘Liquids’. Drink as Much Water as you can.
  • Eating Fruits is also a good Alternate to regulate heat in your body and keep yourself Energetic. We can Eat Fruits like Watermelons, Grapes, apples and your favourite Mango any time whenever we feel hungry.
  • Avoid Eating Fried, Oily and Non Vegetarian Food (atleast in summer). Also Avoid ‘Eating in Excess’ in marriages (a regular practice of many). Light food and Water based fruits are good for heath. Remember do not eat frequently  in Restaurants , Cafes (as it can only increase your expenses and of course your belly)
  • Best way to prevent our eyes from heat exposure is to wear ‘Sunglasses’. But make sure to use only the Sunglasses that protect you from Ultra Violet (UV) rays.
  • In Summer, sun burns are a common problem try applying sunscreen lotion (SPF 25-30) before you move out of the house. Also cover your face with Cloth while you are in exposure to Sunlight.
  • Washing your face twice a day with a good face wash is a good idea to keep your self away from oil and dirt.
  • Use kaolin and sandalwood based face masks with rose water at least thrice a week to keep your skin glowing and clean. Also apply a vitamin e-lotion for sun burns.
  • Meditation and pranayam (breathing exercises) are good for health do practice some breathing exercises in the morning at least for half an hour. This will help you to keep your brain calm and relaxed.
  • Keep your Mind cool – Probably the most important thing one must do is to keep oneself and our mind cool. This excess heat causes temper, irritation and stress and which can lead you or others to problem.
  • Final Point – Keep reading UdaipurBlog because it not only makes you feel relax and good but it also gives you many ideas for that.

The Aftermath of May Heat

This Summer heat in may has Crossed The records of last 50 years temperature of City Of Lakes. It rose upto 48*c in the starting of may month itself. Aint that too catastrophic because Udaipur a city being in the south of Rajasthan was amongst the one of the most coolest city due to its green environment and lakes.

But this was undone in 2010 when the temperature of the city crossed 45*c in the month of May itself which broke all the previous records heat. This Has lead to cause of loo(wind), more people suffering from fever etc.

But the ‘Unstrange’ Thing i myself noticed was this heat caused a lot of harm to vegetation which included plants, trees, vegetables etc.

Here are a few pictures that I snapped in My garden which shows the Ill effects of the alarming Heat even though these are well watered.
