Do you know about this medical startup from Udaipur which saves older patients from Trauma?

Udaipur has always topped the list of ‘the best places to visit’ due to its hotel and tourism industry worldwide, but this city is also home to numerous budding entrepreneurs. And this time, the flag has been held up by Dr. Tanushree Jain.

Dr. Tanushree Jain, a graduate from Manipal University, Karnataka, is currently working as a Chief Executive Officer of Think Out Of The Box (TOOTB) Healthtech Private Limited. Her startup TOOTB Healthcare Private Limited has developed a self-aspirating syringe, which aims at reducing the trauma caused to the patients when they are administered injections by the newly-appointed doctors, nurses, and clinicians. It also got support from the Indian Institute of Management Udaipur Incubation Center (IIMU).

TOOTB focuses on developing innovative products for the medical field and the startup is related to designing disposable syringes. The syringes developed are used to administer drugs through intravenous and intramuscular injection for the treatment of diseases.

The thought of inventing this device struck her mind while she was giving an injection to one of her elderly patients, she was not able to perform Injection-aspiration procedure with one hand and this became the reason for her to develop such a tool. She developed 3d printed fully functional prototype and one thing lead to another.

She believes that the medical field needs a lot of innovations and we should not adjust with already existing old techniques. We should keep innovating on a regular basis which shall provide not only ease to the doctors but also less trauma to the patients during the treatment.

According to the doctor, the main supporter is IIM Udaipur Incubation center team and its mentor – Deepak Joshi. His mentorship and support guided her at every step and helped her to build the startup. She learned marketing skills from Ashish S. Galande who still guides her at every step. Dr. Bhanno Prakash Verma (ENT SURGEON) also shared his medical experience and supported her. She is very thankful to IIM Udaipur Incubation center Team– Dr. Umamaheswaram, Gaurav and Aastha who tremendously supported her throughout this process.

Dr.Tanushree believes that there is a lot of innovation required in the medical field. “Our startup is not only working to overcome some of the medical related problems but also with innovation try to make the already existing devices easier for the doctors, dentist, nurses and less traumatic for the patients. Currently, we are performing clinical trials in the hospitals, looking for investors and planning to launch this device in the market soon” says Tanushree. This startup has also been awarded as National Level Business Plan Competition winner.

About the product:

The startup is related to medical devices. It is particularly related to a disposable syringe used in medical devices for administering medicines through intravenous or intramuscular ways for the treatment of the diseases. The Syringe which is self-aspirating syringe will make the injection procedure easier for the novice doctors, dentists, nurses, clinicians and will prevent unnecessary trauma to the patients. This company is based on motto THINK OUT OF THE BOX- TOOTB. Currently, we are performing clinical trials in the hospitals, looking for investors and planning to launch this device in the market soon.

  • NIDHI-EIR grant, 2 lakh approx., Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.
  • Winner of National Level Business Plan Competition.
  • Filed 3 patents.

We received a special message from Dr. Tanushree Jain that which says: “Believe in your child’s dreams especially women, if they want to change their profession and want to create an impact in the society by doing something good for the society please support them. I would like to give the message to all the doctors If you think you have some idea that will create a change in the medical field then do it, work hard for it. My aim in life to make a world a better place for the patient and to make them knowledgeable about the treatment they are receiving.”

TOOTB has also been a National Level Business Plan Competition winner for the syringe design and usability.

For this innovation, the team at TOOTB has been awarded the National Initiative for Developing and Harnessing Innovation Scheme (NIDHI-EIR) by Department of Science and Technology (Government of India).

World Breastfeeding Week concluded with series of Awareness Programmes

Mother’s milk is the first gift by a mother to her newborn. It is the healthiest form of milk for the baby which contains the right amount of fats, sugar, water, minerals and proteins that ensures his complete physical and mental growth. Mother confers immunity to her baby through this milk which protects him from respiratory infections and diarrhoeal diseases. Breastfeeding the child reduces the risk of blood loss after delivery, breast and ovarian cancer, gaining excess weight and iron deficiency.

A Walkthrough in the Life of Doctors

A person wearing an angelic white coat, stethoscope around his neck, listening to the pain and sufferings of the people. Isn’t that the image of you get in your mind when you think of a doctor? And when you are in utter pain, you do find a Doctor equivalent to God. A Doctor is the noblest profession of serving the entire society.

The Doctors’ day is celebrated every year on 1st July in commemoration of the birth anniversary of eminent physician and freedom fighter, Dr. B.C. Roy, and holds a special significance to the medical practitioners in India. So on this occasion, we tried to find out what some of the renowned doctors from our own udaipur wish to say about their life and profession. This article is dedicated to all the Doctors, and the would be Doctors.

———————————————————

Dr. N.C. Sharma, the present CEO of Geetanjali Medical College, is a very vibrant and dynamic personality. Brought up in Jaipur, he did his MBBS from SMS Medical College (Jaipur) in the year 1972 and MD (Radio diagnosis) in 1976. He manages his clinical practice with administrative affairs very efficiently.

Dr. N.C. Sharma

Through his belief in discipline and team work, he was able to save the lives of four patients who went under anaphylactic shock when CT Scan procedure was done on them. Therefore, he asks the aspiring doctors to work hard in their studies so that they can give their best to their patients. He wants them to work as a team in a disciplined manner and be courteous and honest to the mankind.

When asked about the hardships he faces during his day to day clinical practice, he says that a doctor has long working hours with absolutely no time for leisure & comfort during workdays. He is answerable to patients, their relatives and the society as a whole. Despite all this he has to keep himself calm and should not lose his patience and temper.

He finds Udaipur growing very fast and very well in terms of medical facilities with two medical colleges and many hospitals in the city. But he wants that the people must respect doctors and the paramedical staff and maintain their trust in them.

———————————————————

Dr. Kamla Kanwrani, aged 62 years, has created a benchmark in the field of Obstetrics & Gynecology. She completed her MBBS and MD from RNT Medical College (Udaipur) in 1972 & 76 respectively. She got her FICOG degree in 1987. British government awarded her with MCH (UK) Certificate in 1992 and she even worked as IMA President for two years. She retired from RNT Medical College in 2009 as the Prof.  & HOD of Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and is presently giving her services in Geetanajli Medical College & Hospital as Prof. and H.O.D.

She has handled many critical cases very efficiently which many senior doctors have refused to treat or operate uponincluding a major surgery for removal of a uterine tumor approximately 10 kg in weight. She feels the need of introduction of Laparoscopy technique in Udaipur for the rapid diagnosis.

Cherishing her UG college life, she says to the aspiring doctors that it’s the most beautiful phase of life and they must enjoy it to their fullest. But at the same she reminds them to work hard. They must realize the dignity of this profession and should not lose their values and ethics for the sake of earning money.

She enjoys her work and gets an inner satisfaction by relieving the pain and sufferings of her patients especially of poor and needy women. Her only message to the people of Udaipur is that they must never compromise with the health of females in their families.

———————————————————

When the patients enter the Medicine OPD of Geetanjali Hospital, they find a doctor who is ready to help them in any possible way. He is soft spoken and easily wins the confidence of his patients. He is the Prof. and HOD of Department of Medicine, Dr. B.S. Bomb.

dr.bomb
Dr. B.S. Bomb

Motivated by his parents and religious guru to choose this profession, he did his MBBS and MD (Medicine) from RNT Medical College in 1968 and 1973. He was the former HOD of the Medicine Department in RNT Medical College & M.B. Hospital.

He takes his every case and every patient as a challenge to him. He finds that practicing in a country like India with limited resources is a major difficulty. A doctor has to keep in mind the pocket of the patient while deciding his investigatory procedure and the treatment. He also feels the need of an effective emergency treatment and critical care in Udaipur

He believes that knowledge of your field along with god’s grace and support from family is the backbone of a doctor’s success. He also feels that patient’s blessing gives much more happiness than money. He is indebted to people of Udaipur who have blessed him with their love, affection and trust.

———————————————————

Have you ever seen a very senior doctor singing a romantic song in front of his UG students? May be no one will believe this. But this can be true when that doctor is Dr. S.K. Luhadia, Prof. and HOD of T.B. & Chest Department of Geetanjali Medical College and Hospital. His patients have faith in him and respect him very much. For his students, he is the best teacher.

dr. luhadiya
Dr. S.K. Luhadia

With a noble cause to serve the humanity, he did his MBBS and MD from SMS Medical College (Jaipur). He has been serving in Udaipur from past 30 years. He is also a retired Prof. and HOD of RNT Medical College.

Though unscheduled patients create lots of troubles in his day to day clinical practice, still he never loses his temper on patients. He always tries to assure & reconcile the patients who are in a state of mental turmoil. He remembers a case where a young boy swallowed a pen cap. He was suffering for 10 years, not getting any effective treatment. But Dr. S.K. Luhadia relieved him from his sufferings and pain. He feels the need of introduction of Allergy Tests in Udaipur.

Cherishing his college days, he misses the singing programmes where he used to perform. He feels sad that now-a-days meritorious students do not opt for this challenging profession which ultimately leads to distorting values and ethics in this medical profession. He asks the medical students to have patience as it takes a very long time to establish in this field as compared to others.

Team UdaipurBlog salutes all the Doctors all throughout the nation on this occasion

swine flu udaipur

Seems like the CLOUDS OF BAD DAYS are back for OUR BEAUTIFUL CITY. Feels a little strange no?? So what u think that can be?? Exactly, as the HEADING INDICATES it’s the RETURN OF FLU(s) (aka influenza). It’s a year back story, bloody swine better known as SWINE FLU (H1N1Virus) ruined thousands of lives all over the COUNTRY including our city UDAIPUR. And the BAD NEWS is IT’S BACK!! ya, u heard that RIGHT it is back, but this time the much dreadful news is with SWINE FLU there are TWO more FLU’S in the CITY and these are EYE FLU(aka conjunctivitis and pink eye) and BIRD FLU. Although BIRD FLU is not much spread in the city premises but can be seen in areas nearby UDAIPUR, so resting on tenterhooks (looking positively) we will discuss the details shortly (when required) with an UPDATE. This time our old adversary SWINE FLU is accompanied by two other deteriorating infectious diseases EYE FLU and BIRD FLU.

Everyone might have heard about the RAPID INCREASE in CASES of these EVIL diseases. This time again SWINE FLU is on its imperiling heights. One can easily see many SEVERE cases of SWINE FLU round the city.

According to a well known newspaper on September 3, 2010

(Dainik Bhaskar):
164 patients in the district so far are tested. Of these 4 patients died, 57 are confirmed and the screening is still going on. APPROXIMATELY 30 teams have been declared by the government for screening purposes all over Udaipur. These teams are screening in different 56 wards (city division in blocks).

As the name indicates FLU (aka influenza) are highly infectious diseases that cause fever, chills, cough, body aches, headaches, and sometimes ear aches and even sinus problems etc. The flu is caused by the influenza VIRUS (small infectious agent). As my personal experience most of the people suffering from these infectious diseases comes under the age group of 13-35 i.e. the YOUTH. My request to the YOUTH through this article is, please go through it and learn the basic contents of these diseases. Ponder the context and instructions for the betterment of yourself and the people nearby you. So Let me explain you briefly about the CAUSE(s), SYMPTOMS, PRECAUTIONS and TREATMENT (RECOMMENDED by a DOCTOR) of these infectious diseases briefly.

Let me firstly start with the most vulnerable and known disease nowadays:

Swine FLu Udaipur

SWINE FLU:

ORIGIN (source/cause): Particularly it is a disease of pigs. It is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by one of many Influenza A viruses. Most commonly, swine flu is of the H1N1 influenza subtype. However, they can sometimes come from the other types, such as H1N2, H3N1, and H3N2. The current outbreak of swine flu that has infected humans is of the H1N1 type. Basically Transmission of the virus from pigs to humans causes the disease. Transmission either takes place from contact with infected pigs (most common way) and from contact with infected humans (much less common way).

SYMPTOMS:

They are similar to those of regular flu, and include:

  • Body aches
  • Chills
  • Cough
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • fever (Temperature)
  • Tiredness (fatigue)
  • Diarrhea (less common)
  • Vomiting (less common) etc.

PRECAUTIONS:

  • Wash your hands regularly with soap,
  • Try to stay healthy,
  • Get plenty of sleep,
  • Do plenty of exercise,
  • Try to manage your stress ,
  • Drink plenty of liquids ,
  • Eat a well balanced diet,
  • Refrain from touching surfaces which may have the virus ,
  • Do not get close to people who are sick Stay away from crowded areas if there is a swine flu outbreak in your area etc.

TREATMENT:

FOR TREATMENT PLEASE CONSULT A DOCTOR !!!

Let me provide you a little FACTUAL INFORMATION about treatment of SWINEFLU ::
[There are drugs and vaccines around, that can effectively treat swine flu infection in humans (and many types of flu infections in humans). There are two main types: adamantanes (amantadine and remantadine) and inhibitors of influenza neuraminidase (oseltamivir and zanamivir). Beside drugs, supportive care at home or in hospital, focuses on controlling fevers, relieving pain and maintaining fluid balance, as well as identifying and treating any secondary infections or other medical problems can also be helpful.]

DON”T WORRY:: the majority of people infected with the virus make a full recovery if reported at the right time so BE AWARE and TAKE CARE !!

REMEMBER:: Please don’t act CARELESS and HESITATED in CONSULTING DOCTORS as your ONE SMART STEP CAN SAVE MANY LIVES !!!

These days next to SWINE FLU the second most infectious ailment in the city is EYEFLU. One can easily see people suffering from EYEFLU (aka conjunctivitis and pink eye) in the city without much care for them and the other people. Even some of them are unaware to the INCONCIEVABLE

So now let’s discuss about the second most infectious ailment in the city i.e.

Eye Flu Udaipur

EYEFLU:

ORIGIN (source/cause): The infection occurring in the conjunctiva (that lines the eyelid is called conjunctivitis) mostly occurs due to an allergic reaction or an infection. The inflammation that results from it causes swelling of the small blood vessels, which, in turn, gives a pink or red cast to the white portion of the eyes. It’s a highly contagious disease. It can spread from one person to other through direct contact.

Some of the MAIN CAUSES OF EYE FLU are:

  • Direct contact with an infected person,
  • Overcrowding,
  • Unhygienic surroundings,
  • Eyestrain,
  • Bacteria,
  • Virus,
  • Irritating substance or material in the eyes,
  • Allergies,
  • Environmental factors, such as smoke, dust, or pollen and

SYMPTOMS:

  • Eyes turn reddish,
  • Itching in the eyes ,
  • Watery secretion from the eyes ,
  • Pus formation in the eyes ,
  • Redness in the white of the eye or inner eyelid ,
  • Increased amount of tears ,
  • Thick yellow discharge from the eyes, which crusts over the eyelashes, especially after sleep,
  • Green or white discharge from the eye ,
  • Burning eyes,
  • Blurred vision ,
  • Increased sensitivity to light and Inflamed eyes etc.

PRECAUTIONS:

  • Do not share towels, handkerchiefs, linen, pillows, sunglasses (etc),
  • Avoid shaking hands on physical contact with an infected person,
  • Patients should wear dark glasses,
  • Wash eyes and hands frequently,
  • Medicines are ineffective if it is due to a viral infection and
  • Consult your doctor and use medicines under his supervision etc.

TREATMENT:

FOR TREATMENT PLEASE CONSULT AN EYE CARE DOCTOR !!!

Let me provide you a little FACTUAL INFORMATION about treatment of EYEFLU::

[Its medication can be a mix of prescribed and over the counter medicines. For bacterial infections doctors generally prescribe antibiotics to attack the bacteria. The medication can be delivered in varieties like eye drops or ointments that are applied to the eyes for a few days. Pink eye (eye flu) caused by allergies can be solved with allergy eye drops like Patanol. Patanol is one solution that has been proven to be effective in preventing pink eye caused by allergies with just 2 drops a day. It is safe according to the manufacturer for kids over the age of three. Other medication with antihistamines Recommended by a professional, can include anything from liquid to pill state. (Also, for relieving discharge, warm compresses are great for removing the sticky residue as well as the crusty, dried portions around the eyes).]

As mentioned above, at present we are not discussing BIRD FLU as there are no heard cases about the disease in the CITY. An UPDATE about the details of BIRD FLU will be soon posted if required.

This was all about FLU(s)…

In MY OPINION, A little AWARENESS and CARE can be helpful and safeguard you from these life threatening diseases. So live AWARE and ALERT!!!

MAY GOD BLESS US ALL !!!!

Note: Any medical information published on this website is not intended as a substitute for informed medical advice and you should not take any action before consulting with a health care professional.

Update (September 19, 2010):

The number of flu cases in Udaipur continues to rise at an alarming pace, so far with increasing number of deaths (due to Swine flu) from different parts of city 2 more died on September 17, including a 8 month pregnant women. All deaths have been reported in less than a month – from September 2 to 19. More or less  Eye Flu has also been spread to whole Udaipur.

According to a well known newspaper (Dainik Bhaskar) On September 19, 2010 a Total of 123 patients had been confirmed swine Flu positive in city MB Hospital while astonishingly12,000 Eye Flu drops are being sold daily in the city.

With rapid increase of these diseases in the city, we got some shocking news from our source(s) regarding the unavailability of certain recommended conveniences for the patients in the Swine Flu ward of MB Hospital like Fumigation and to provide defending mask(s) for the relatives of the patients. Fumigation is a process in which disinfectant is spread in the form of smoke and vapors to disinfect the surroundings from microorganisms so that the well beings approaching the surroundings does not get affected from the disease(s). Fumigation has been weekly recommended in the Swine Flu labs and wards but is being completely neglected in MB Hospital.

Defending mask(s) are also crucially important for safety of well beings, still the hospital administration is not intriguing all these steps seriously which will consequently lead to severe increase in spread of  such diseases.

We again request everyone to adopt precautionary measures like washing hands frequently and avoiding contact with persons having flu like symptoms. For more info read Precautions suggested above in the article for prevention from these diseases.

Be Aware & Take Care!!!
