Rangaanjali’

dadu

Sculpture Symposium leaves behind International Masterpieces to be erected in the city of Udaipur

international monumental symposium

Monumental Sculptures are fascinating to watch. They not only provide a city with elegance and grandeur, they help define it. Inspirational and overbearing, these structures tell you a lot about a place and its people. Well it takes great efforts and determination to carve them in the first place. And to see more than a dozen of them crafted at the same time is surely an experience of a lifetime.

The First International Monumental Sculpture Symposium concluded last week in Udaipur. The ideal venue for it was the cultural village of Shilpgram where 21 artists from across the country and the world came together to exhibit their craftsmanship. This post is dedicated to the fabulous masterpieces that they left behind.

Bringing in their signature styles to their work, the artists who participated in the symposium had to deal with the Udaipur climate for a month to finish their works. The April heat and the windy showers that slightly jeopardized the ceremony at the end.  Now that the sculptures are ready, they wait for their installation at different locations of the city. So even though you might not have visited the symposium, be prepared to see the sculptures as landmarks in the city of Udaipur.

This giant effort has been successful because of Bhupesh Kavadia, a sculpture artist himself, who put together the idea of the symposium. I wish that this legacy continues in the future as the city of Udaipur offers the perfect setting and material for this kind of event.

However I might have one complain to make. The symposium went on for a month. I visited it for more than a couple of times to catch the sculptures in different stages of creation and to talk to the artists but I hardly found any visitors arriving on their own interest. The people of the city will have to appreciate more and take higher interests to make such events successful. Afterall this effort is incomplete without everyone’s participation.

Here is a compilation of works from the symposium: Video Link Here

Shilpgram – Site for Crafts and Arts fair in Udaipur

shilpgram

Shilpgram is a hindi word which translates itself to Village Of Art And Craft. Shilpgram is situated 3kms west to the famous Fateh Sagar Lake in Udaipur.

It’s a State sponsored living musium stretched on a 70 acre land on the foothills of Aravali. Shilpgram or the Rural Arts and Crafts Village in Udaipur is one of the seven centers of the West Zone Cultural Center (WZCC), established by the government in 1986.

Every year in the end of the year, a 10-day festival is organised which shows glimpses of the complete rural India within the 70 acre itself. There are 26 representative huts of member states in this craft village, incorporating traditional architectural features of different ethnic groups residing within the Zone.

Artisans and craftsmen from all over the nation join this festival to display their best outcome of their art and culture for which their zone is best renowned. Be it the warm woolens from Jammu and Kashmir, or even the Bamboo artwork from far east states, the famous Banarasi silk sarees, along with our very own Rajasthani craftwork, from hand-crafted key chains and bangles, to glasswork, pottery and even furnitures, everything can be seen waiting for you at the festival. All the items are not for display alone; you may purchase the things available with your free will, and take them home with you.

At the entrance you find the traditional dancers welcoming you. Mud huts with thatched roofs make out the splendid village scene, with you yourself witnessing it live. Hungry after walking so long? There are plenty of mouth watering food and “DESI” fast-food items from different traditions, in your way.

Moreover, in these 10-days every evening you can also witness the rich culture of India, via the juvenile traditional and cultural folk programmes, each day with a different theme and different heart throbbing programmes on the open-theatre stage at shilpgram.

Not only Udaipies(Udaipur Guys), but people from all across the globe eagerly wait for this once-a-year fest, and to be a part of it. So what are you waiting for dear udaipies? Just make up your mind and be proud to be a part of this unique fest of its kind, going back to your rich cultural roots.

Modern Tourism in Udaipur

The Traditional concept of Tourism is well known by the people, which includes:  Luxurious Hotels, Special places to Visit.  Specially in a country like India the list of such places is never ending. We have quite a long list of such places – starting from the Taj Mahal, Eastern Coastal Line, The Breathtaking beauty of Himalayas, the western deserts etc. But that period is long gone when tourists used to visit such places merely to Eat, Drink & Merrymaking, this modern period calls for improvisation.

Many tourists want to learn & explore more about the people they meet & the places they visit. This indicates that the present day tourism is more ‘Knowledge Oriented‘ or ‘Cultural Tourism‘. This is where we have an advantage over the others, Udaipur is blessed with all the characteristics which will undoubtedly make us a leader in the present world of Tourism.

We have so much to offer to the people – almost every place, palace and lakes  has a story associated with it, and the Modern Tourism demands exploration and learning, this is where we take the lead. Secondly, the Rich Heritage and culture adds to the increased interaction between tourists and local people. The tourists get a glimpse of the traditional life-style and culture and this is what matters. These small interactions, experiences are preserved by the tourists and these small things leave a impression upon the tourists which actually shapes the image of any place.

Ways to promote Tourism :

Multimedia presentations can be made available in the top tourist spots. These MM presentations would include topics like music, culture, history, biodiversity etc.

A Special emphasis to highlight the Cultural Tourism and Knowledge Based Tourism should be made in order to support them.
