Getting along with the food truck fad – Here’s a list of Udaipur’s food trucks

Udaipur has seen an upsurge in the number of food trucks coming up these days and it is, with no doubt whatsoever, the most hygienic way to chow down on some of the best dishes without having to burn a hole in your pocket. While munching at food trucks is definitely clean and better, there are other perks to it too; as the lack of space in the city increases, and people becoming averse to the idea of sitting down at a cafe and chewing on food leisurely, food trucks gain significance. Besides, it is often costlier to rent a place and start from scratch.

Food trucks are a one-time investment and it’s just a lot easier and fun to drive around places exploring different spots of the town and giving the taste of your food to almost everyone. They are very cost effective in the long run. Food trucks have become a trending topic in the whole country and almost everywhere there is a growing inclination towards eating at these trucks that have rewritten a new page in the history of culinary evolution.

Robinhood Army becomes the padman of Udaipur – celebrates Women’s day

The whole city celebrated Women’s day with much enthusiasm and excitement. While restaurants and cafes came up with offers to invite girl gangs and women to hang out at their places, and shopping malls celebrating in a similar manner, Robinhood Army took this day as an opportunity to teach rural women and girls about female hygiene practices.

Robinhood Army Udaipur completed two wonderful years of unmatched efforts to eliminate hunger and educating children across town on March 6. They celebrated their second anniversary with different events planned over a span of 5 days.

Needless to say, Udaipur literally upped the ante by performing exceptionally well in the latest ranking conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India and has really given the other cities a run for their money. It is the combined efforts of the people of the city and the Municipality that Udaipur is now seen as a competitor in the smart city race. Udaipur ranked 4th in the rankings and was judged on the basis of the commencement and completion of projects within the timeframe along with the tender allotment process and the implementation speed.

Some of the recent developments in the city include pole-less old city area, under which all the open lines and connections including cable, internet, telephone will be made underground, also, the undergoing sewage line modification and the door-to-door garbage collection plans have given a boost to the residents and motivated everyone to perform our bit towards making Udaipur a Smart City.

Different people have different approaches to the concept of Smart City. It depends on the level of development, desire to change and reform, and most importantly, the dreams of the citizens of the city. The main aim remains to promote cities that provide core infrastructure and provide a decent standard of living to its residents along with a clean and green environment.

The main objectives with which a smart city is developed include:
  1. E-Governance, through online records, complaint management, etc.
  2. Green City, providing alternate energy and utilities, also, being transport efficient.
  3. Public Safety which means strict law enforcement and proper security and surveillance.
  4. Smart Building which optimizes energy and smart metering.
  5. Proper healthcare services followed by asset management, telemedicine, and remote monitoring.
  6. Education that is research-based and is technologically equipped.
  7. Transport, which includes, fleet optimization, airport, and railway management.

Running along the same lines, Smart City Board gave a nod to ABD tenders (Area Based Development worth ₹537 crores to L&T company. They broadly include the development of 50 Bus Q shelters, Conservation and development of works of heritage appearance, lighting for bazaars in the Walled city area under Udaipur Smart City project Phase-I and redevelopment of Government schools and Anganbaris in the municipal areas for which the work-order will be prepared in the next 10 days. Whereas, the work shall commence after the company’s two-month survey and is expected to complete the same within a timeframe of 2 years.

Here are some amendments that make the ABD tender such a special gift for the city:

An all-day water supply to all the eighteen wards coming under the Walled city area.

New network of sewage lines to be laid.

Upgradation of old lines with new techniques.

Pole-less walled city area with all the connections going underground.

New roads in ABD area.

Covered drainage lines and gutters.

SCADA system implementation that helps to gather reports online about electricity, water, etc. through sensors and delivering commands to control relays.

The Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD) lauded the tender allotment process of Smart City Limited and Board and gave directions as to how the same should be served as a Model Tender throughout the country.

Rajasthan was the first major state to have gotten the smart city projects approved for all the four cities in mere two rounds of the competition. Udaipur got through in just the first round of 20 smart cities along with Jaipur followed by Ajmer and Kota in the second round of the competition. Rajasthan is one of the 11 states to start implementing the six urban missions that comprise the development of the heritage city and augmentation yojana. The Government of Rajasthan is spending close to ₹30,000 crores on these projects. The projects are expected to be completed by the year 2020.

What are your thoughts about Udaipur’s Smart City mission?

Tell us in the comments below and suggest some ideas and measures we can take to take it a level further. After all, it is our city and our participation remains of the utmost importance!

What all to take away from Udaipur with just ₹500?

Udaipur has always enchanted us with its beauty and it becomes next to impossible to forget once you have been here. Such is the charm of the city that people often refer to this place as the ‘Kashmir of Rajasthan’ or ‘Venice of the East’. No wonder why this city is compared with some of the most beautiful places on the planet.

Visiting this majestic city surely is one-of-a-kind experience but what really strengthens this experience are the memories of Udaipur and more so in the form of collectibles, antiques, handicrafts, jewelry, wearables and many more items. Udaipur has been gifted with a rich history and unlike any other place, puts it on with pride, in the form of some famous intricate artworks and keepsakes that have since long, become the popular choice for reviving the royal Rajputana feel and a chance to reanimate the luxurious lifestyle of the ancestors of Mewar. And not just this, these things are nowadays used to decorate houses and other places as well.

But ‘the paradox of choice’ is as true as it gets and Udaipur is filled up to the brim with loads of varieties of items to take and one often gets confused as to what to buy and what to leave behind. Additionally, a substantial amount of money is what it usually costs to buy these items because things can get really expensive sometimes.

Combating Swine Flu – Myths, Symptoms, and Precautions

Swine Flu cases in the city have seen a sudden spike recently with almost 9 patients registered within the last 14 days at MB Hospital. The highly-contagious H1N1 virus is taking a toll on people’s lives as it spreads through the city with 2 positive cases within the last 2 days putting the health department in a fix.

For those unfamiliar with the widespread disease, H1N1 flu, also called the swine flu, is a respiratory disease that appears in pigs caused by a type of Influenza A-virus. People do not usually get swine flu but human infections saw a rise in 2009 as it became prevalent when a strain of swine flu infected many people around the world. It typically happens during the onset of winters. Swine Flu is a transmittable disease and the virus spreads usually through coughing, sneezing, or touching any bacteria-coated surface and then touching eyes or nose with those hands.

It is natural for people to be skeptical about it as every year many people succumb to death due to this very disease but there are certain myths that people normally believe in and are not generally true.

Combating Swine Flu - Myths, Symptoms, and Precautions
Source – Deccan Chronicle
  1. Swine flu has no cure

This is one big myth that makes people lose hope, which, to no surprise, is false. Oseltamivir (commonly sold under the name Tamiflu) has the ability to decrease the severity of the flu within 48 hours of the symptom appearing. It helps to prevent infection.

  1. I’m young and strong, it cannot happen to me

Mind you! This is the biggest myth you could possibly have. Patients with ages as low as 30-40 have been admitted to hospitals and many have fallen seriously ill due to it. Rather than being over-confident, it would we wise if each one of us takes some precautions.

  1. Swine flu happens just once

The H1N1 virus, like any other flu virus, may reoccur. Vaccination helps, but only lasts for a certain time period. You must keep this in mind and get re-vaccinated before it starts spreading.

  1. Don’t eat pork, you might get infected!

Again, false! Despite the name, it has no relation whatsoever with the flesh of a pig. The virus spreads through bacteria expelled in the air through people coughing and sneezing.

  1. Its just cough, it’ll go

Coughing and sneezing for prolonged periods isn’t good. You must visit the doctor to get it treated and if that doesn’t help either, no harm taking a test. Why regret later!?

Symptoms and precautions

You must visit the doctor if you happen to experience any of the below-mentioned flu symptoms :

High fever

Cough

Chest pain when you breathe

Nausea/vomiting

Loss of appetite

Lethargy

Headache

It becomes fairly necessary to brace ourselves from this deadly disease. There are some simple things one should keep in mind to ensure the virus never comes close. It is imperative that you and the people around you follow these set of precautionary measures. Life is too precious to be wasted on a disease like this!

  • Always cover your nose and mouth with a mask or tissue. Stack your house with masks and remember putting them on whenever you go out.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water and also keep a hand sanitizer with you.
  • Avoid touching eyes and nose while you are out or when you have dirty hands. Germs spread this way!
  • Try keeping a distance from people who are sick or are coughing and sneezing.
  • Call in sick and take a leave, if you have to. No need to push it.
  • Rush to the doctor, first thing, if you see any symptoms for an extended period.
  • Vaccinations are not always effective, if you come in contact with the virus, rush to the doctor and ask for Tamiflu. These antiviral medicines halt the progress of this virus.

Comment below with your suggestions and ideas on how to combat this deadly disease.

Reaching out: NGOs in Udaipur

In a world where money defines happiness and success of an individual, we often tend to forget there are people who have put a lot of work into bringing a smile on other people’s face and that, for them is their earning of a lifetime. Nothing gives them as much happiness as helping others. India accounts for the largest number of people living below the international poverty line, as suggested by a study in 2013, with 30 percent of its population living under the $1.90-a-day poverty measure. To put this into a better perspective, almost one out of three people in India are living without the basic amenities.

India is known to be home to nearly 3 million NGOs working in different areas like health, education, rural, tribal and social development amongst others. They vary in size and focus and are one of the largest employers of people in India. Udaipur too has many NGOs working for the social and economic development of the weaker sections of the society. It is about time we all get acquainted with some of these and make a valuable contribution.

Narayan Seva Sansthan

Reaching out: NGOs in UdaipurNarayan Seva Sansthan is one of the oldest working NGOs of Udaipur and has left quite an impression through its work globally. The organization has till date successfully conducted 3,27,108 ‘free of cost’ surgeries through their state-of-the-art prosthetics and orthotics department for patients suffering from polio and other ‘by birth’ disabilities. It also provides ‘free of cost’ lodging and boarding facilities with free meals twice a day and has helped around 0.8 million differently-abled people by providing them with wheelchairs.
